question about autoblogs...

When setting up an autoblog, is it necessary to ask the domain owners of the sites you are taking feeds from for their permission first?

Do autoblogs do well in the serps? What if you sprinkle in some original content here and there...

How does SEO with an autoblog work? I have never set one up so how do you get it to target specific keywords if you have no control over the content that is posted.

This is the only part of my current campaign that I am not entire sure about how to accomplish properly (this and the testing part*). And I will be setting it up starting tomorrow so any responses (good or bad) would be absolutely great.

IMHO feeds that are publicly accessible are fair game.

Sometimes there's a Terms Of Use page on the site. See if it says anything about the feed. If not, it's fair game, IMHO.

    IANAL.

Autoblogs do as well or as bad as any other site with duplicate content, if the content is coming from feeds. AFAIK the duplicate content penalty applies to pages on the same site with the same content. There's currently lively discussion and argument about whether it applies cross-domain. Use the search function.

You can set any blog up with the appropriate on-site SEO. And you can use regular offsite techniques such as link building for offsite SEO. No difference.

The only degree of control you have over the on-page content, including keywords, is the selection/filtering you apply to your feeds and items within feeds. In other words, you can show only items with the right keywords. You can also write preambles and closing paragraphs with your keywords and insert feed item(s) in the middle.

Thanks alot for the answer joe, it really helped me out. Just one last question I am curious about.

Do autoblogs still work well? I chose to use an autoblog over a regular blog/site because it fits perfectly into my time constraints (school, extracurriculars, sports, homework/studies, college essays and such). It allows me to have a site up with quality content to provide to visitors, as well as giving me the ability to focus on marketing my campaign. (I don't think I would be able to do both with my time limitations.)

However, as said earlier, I have never used or made an autoblog so I have no idea whether or not they are a good idea as far as a landing page/informational blog goes.

I tried one once and it did not rank really and I made no money. I sold it for a few bucks to get some of my domain cost back.
