External Harddrive Question...

I have a tech question...

If when installing a new program I change the install directory to a directory on my external harddrive (instead of the default C: drive which is the harddrive of my computer) will I then be able to access that program on a different computer if I connect the external harddrive to the other computer?

Thanks in advanced!

Ryan

You will be able to install it on the other computer if you save the setup file lets say you install openoffice.exe and the setup file to your computer external hard drive, when you add it to another computer however and dont have the external hard drive you may get some errors if it is windows p.c for example E:// the destination folder could not be found, please contact your adminstion ect

    hope that helps

my answer is yes because some programs can run even by simply copying the program folder into your flash drive or external drive but remember some software wouldn't work in this way like the other guy here told you..registry files.

I think it'd depend on the type of software you're running. If it's something big from Microsoft (such as Office), Adobe (photoshop) or a game like Call of Duty, then it probably won't run on another computer if it's just installed on a directory on your external hard drive (I'm not even sure if you can do this with these programs). If it's one of those smaller utilities/programs which doesn't require registry changes, then you could probably do what you're proposing.

Okay, thanks for all the responses everyone!

It sounds like I just need to try it for each program and see if it works.

Ryan, basically yes, but just about any program that is written in the last several years will bomb. Older games or something like that will probably work.

If you're trying to share data (e.g., the files created by a program like word documents, photoshop graphics, etc.) you can place those on the external hard drive without a problem.

      Hope it helps!

Yeah, it's going to depend on whether any settings are stored locally (eg in the registry) during the installation proceess, which is actually probably the case with most software.

Clever software would re-create the missing registry entries if they're missing but most software won't bother to check.

    Cheers,
