What do you use to keep track of your keywords?

Say you have 20 different site, blogs, etc...and for each site you try to utilize 10 keywords that you're trying to rank for with article marketing, social bookmarking, backlinking, whatever. That's 200 keywords to try to keep track of.

How do you do it?

And how do you remember what you posted where and when?

    I use a simple spreadsheet.

Each sheet has a niche name.

    So the tabs have

    Niche 1, niche 2, niche3 ........

Then on each sheet are the keywords with columns saying what I am doing with them. I also include affiliate links and other info.

    IMPORTANT -- SEE BELOW

Oh how I had just told the truth. I just muddle through like everyone else. I wish I was more organised

Ken told you the smart way, and I always do things the smart way...except when I don't. Like Ken, I didn't bother setting up a spread sheet either, because I probably wouldn't take the time to update it.

All I do is this -- each website I own is in its own folder. I can look at the page titles to see which keywords I've already worked. Probably not the best way, but it's simple and quick for me.

I just create a folder on my computer for a new project I am working on and I create notepad files in the folder. One is labelled masterfile and in that I have all the links for all the properties or posts I create and in front of the title of the post I have the keywords. Then I have a file just for keywords and one file just for the pages I create.

I also keep a Market Samurai project file for that niche in the folder just to stay organized. Hope that helps

EDIT: I forgot about the affiliate programs and graphics. I have links to all the affiliate programs I am promoting and if I use any images or videos I create sub folders and place them in the folders

I have two main folders, one for my sites and one for my clients sites. Each site gets a folder added to one or the other and it is named the same as the domain. In that folder goes backups working folders (named with project and date) and different text files. I always have one with the cpanel and other info, some text files have keyword info and others just whatever notes I may need at a later date. If I have created any backlinks to the site those are in an excel file and added to the folder as well.

Sites that I am actively working on get a ! in front of the folder name so they stay at the top of the list until I am done with them.

I set up my email client (pegasus) the same way, every site gets its own folder so that every email that pertains to that particular site is in the same folder.

What ever you do back your files up in at least two places on a regular basis.

ALL IMPORTANT FILES SHOULD BE IN AT LEAST THREE LOCATIONS WITH AT LEAST ONE OFF SITE!!!

Some people think that is overkill but I had a house fire that completely gutted my house and office a few years back and the fact that I had a set of backups off site saved me big time. You can never have too many backups especially now that drive space is so cheap.

We had a php program developed to do it that tracks them by market and marketing platform.

It keeps track of where they've been used and not used so we can load up candidates ahead of time and will automatically dedupe if the keywords are already in the system.

It's a work in progress but you should be able to get something programmed like that pretty cheap - at least the first iteration.

Maybe one of the resident php experts here will see this thread and develop out a nice product we can all buy. :-)

I'm with Mo...I use Market Samurai, it will track your rank for your keywords and does a ton of other great stuff (and a spreadsheet if the project is that important to me)

I'm just starting with keywords. But, what I found VERY helpful. I was searching for keywords using Google's keyword tool. When I found a bunch I liked, I could export to Google Docs spreadsheet. So, now everything is there. The only thing I don't like is that it is very slow compared to Excel.

I'm working on some new things. So, nothing to promote just yet.

My favorite, can't-live-without-it keyword tracking tool is free Rank Checker for Firefox. You can set up a file for each niche.

Once downloaded, open it by clicking the little symbol at the bottom of your browser. Enter your domain and add your keywords, either one at a time or use the Add Multiple Keywords feature. Save the file and call it something related to your niche.

Click the Start button and it will tell your site ranks for those keywords (if you're in the first 200 listings) in Google. Export it and save it as an Excel file.

You can have multiple files - one for each niche. You can add the domains for article directories or other domains where you have content and quickly find competitive content that is outranking you.

You can modify those files at any time. Every time you open Rank Checker, your saved files are shown for easy access. Add or subtract keywords or domains as needed to watch the niche.

There are other ways to do this, I'm sure, but I love being able to open it and quickly run a quick check on my site performance for my main keywords. Just takes a few minutes to set up. I also like that you can export and save the data in Excel so you can track performance over time or just to have a backup copy of your keyword lists.
