What was your first venture?

I am at that vital point now where I have been running a lot of research for myself and trying to choose a niche. I have a very shoddy website currently which is freely hosted but it is very limited. I'm unsure in what order to begin developing it, i.e, the looks, then the content, then hooking it up with some affiliate links etc?

Where did you begin and would you say that you are miles away from that point, now that you have progressed years on?

I started working with a program called Niche Blitzkrieg, it taught me how to create a small empire of websites that all generate a bit of money. Nothing too crazy, but it does pay for itself.

It's a great way to get your first boost into the internet marketing industry too. Oh n also, I have a free ebook if ya want it. It's in my sig, maybe it can help you find a good host and domain?

Also I am not YEARS on, but I have seen success. I've actually been laid off recently too which has led me to spend more time on my online business and it's actually quite nice.

My first venture was a membership site on self defence.

As a total newbie in 2006 that project was doomed. It stopped before the site was even set up due to the realisation that i needed a lot more knowledge.

Moved on since to 1 membership site in the education niche, Forex, offline marketing, seminars and other IM projects.

My first site ever was www.freetrades.com

I was planning on taking over eBay by making an auction site that was free to use. Well, after I learned about SEO, marketing, ect I realized I should give up my dream, so I did.

What I didn't realize is I should of kept the domain name because Im sure I could of got a good price for it from some stock company. Ohh well, live and learn.

My first venture was (and still is...) article writing.

It is something that I enjoy doing so why change?

I do however, have a few other 'irons in the fire'.

Thank you all. How did you make the decision in which route to take? Was it a long process or did you just pick something that you were already knowledgeable on?

I also write articles but do this alongside my regular full-time job.

Mine was on a price-comparison site for hosting packages. You could choose how many MB you needed.

Problem is I had no idea how to get traffic to it - I believed in build-it-and-they'll-cum, and they didn't.

Also I now know there is only one choice for share hosting - Hostgator - its so cheap and reliable and well featured there is no point penny pinching.

I did get some very cheap labour. The rent-a-coder guy charged something like $150 to get me the data. So I paid £75 which at the time = $150. Then a few months later, a few false starts and he could only get half done, due to hurricane ... so I got $75 back, which was £50 by the time I got refunded as the exchange rate changed.

If he did no work I would have profited from this lucrative forex trade!

My first site (doing online marketing) was PlayKillerGuitar.com. I jumped right into product creation. I actually sold these tutorials on eBay first to help drive traffic to my website, and eventually, ebay didn't allow digital products anymore, so I had to use other strategies for getting traffic, mainly SEO at the time.

Last year I converted them to physical products via Kunaki, because even though I haven't done much with PlayKillerGuitar.com in the past couple of years, it still makes money.

I learned a lot just by jumping in and "going for it".

My first venture was a total flop. I started a blog to discuss what I thought I wanted to discuss, as a way to build credibility for my future consulting practice. I got moderate interest, some nice backlinks, and some good discussion. But I got zero leads.

    What I didn't do:

    1. Keyword research to determine the best blog name, focus, and article niches.

    2. Search research to determine how many other websites were competing for the same high-level organic search results

    3. Devise a lead collection strategy

    4. Understand how the Google algorithm works, in general

    5. Understand all the options for driving traffic to your site

    6. Understand the best role for a blog in your lead-to-client development process

Now I'm getting a fresh start on 3) after having done 1) and 2) and with a much better handle on 4) and 5) and 6).

I started selling stuff on ebay, then had a site where people sent in letters and got advice. No income on that until one day someone told me about adsense. I put adsense on the site and it actually made some money!

Then I dived into adsense for a while, making money without any physical items to ship was just amazing to me!

I made my first adsense site 2 years ago it was made for ice hockey world championship, I thought, that lot of people will look usefull info about world cup and will attend my site and click on ads , of course there wasnt traffic so I just earned 10 dollars, because some of my friends click on adds. I did not do any keyword research and on competition, so I had no skils of SEO only how to buy domain and set up wordpress with fantastico on hostgator account , and as it seems its not enoughf. Only what I can say, need only basic seo skills, skills how to set up blogs and change headers, skills to finde niche and skills how to write articles, and the rest is only action, if you will stop one day and will continue after one or two weeks, so you will forget everything and will start from beginning, need to do everyday little by little and succes will come, learn from other succes and make your own
      Wish you all the best!

I'm working on my first one right now. I came to this decision because it is a niche I am familiar with. I figure with first hand knowledge, it will show through in the content, thereby giving me some authority.

    Thank you.

It really sounds like most people have learned their skills whilst actually working through it? Did anyone read any books on online marketing or just websites?

I read so many books and many websites. I think I spent most of my first IM year just reading up and researching things on the internet. You would be surprised how much free stuff I found.

I'm discovering exactly this right now. I'm so glad I found this forum, I'm learning a little too much I think. I'm unsure how much is actually going to be absorbed!

My first venture was 7 years ago. I taught myself html, built a hosting comparison website, and made a little money. (That was back in the day when you could actually do PPC for the term "web hosting" and not lose money.
