Anyone using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from both Microsoft and Norton. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report'. If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: 'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful....'

Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, And the person who sent it to
you will gain access to your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself
'life owner'.

It's always a good idea to be suspicious of unsolicited files attached to an email, especially if you don't recognize the address. I don't even watch PowerPoint presentations sent by people I actually know.

Thank you, Victoria. Just wondering if you're a regualr reader of Snopes, and if so, do you find you can almost tell which e-mails are fakes because of it?

      All the best,
      Michael

Thanks for letting us all know. It's a shame that this kind of garbage will never go away. It's like people have nothing better to do with their lives.

I never understood why someone would waste so much time trying to hurt other people ... pretty sad!

That's one of the oldest hoax virus alerts I know.

          All the clues are there

"this information arrived this morning" - with no date given.
"send it to everyone you know" (I know that's in there somewhere as this is a really old hoax0 - which makes you a spammer
"anti-virus softwares are not capable of destroying it" - of course they are, that's what they do.
shock, horror language - "this will destroy your C drive, kill the cat and poison your tea"

PLEASE - don't pass on warnings that you haven't written yourself from personal experience unless you have checked their authenticity - it just frightens people.

If you've emailed your friends/family about this - please email again and tell them it was a hoax.

Not to mention, the version I saw uses the word "dangerousness".

Plus, most legitimate warnings will come from well-known companies that you are already doing business with.

            All the best,

            Mike:

I highly suspected this was a hoax too....mostly because I pay close attention to the technical details.

While it is possible to infect your computer via an attachement, it's impossible for a scripting exploit to attack your BIOS.

Even if it could, the format utility isn't there anymore (it was dumped over a decade ago due to stupid people like me turning IDE fomatted hard drives into paperweights lol), so you can't do that even if you wanted to.

Don't worry, I used to fall for stuff like this too. Nowadays, I at least wait for the press releases before I jump onboard.

No biggie. At least you're trying.

We all gotta start somewhere. If you knew how clueless I was several decades ago, you would laugh at my stupidity. Where do you think most of my stories come from?

Anytime I see something that says "Norton confirms they can't handle it" or any other wording that calls on an outside source as an authority, I automatically suspect a hoax.
