I am a bit confused.. it appears that in order to sell on amazon.. I need to find a product in the same category of the same product code... what if the stuff I am selling do not have a bar code ?? why I can not simply list it under certain category?? am I wrong here? or there is something I do not know about??

It's been awhile since I sold on Amazon, but if I remember correctly you must upgrade to Pro (or something like that, $39.95 per month) to create your own listings.

Amazon is not eBay. Their goal is to have one listing for each item, and multiple sellers for that one item listing. Most commodity products have a UPC that uniquely identifies them. But if you have a product that doesn't, you can create a new product page on Amazon. You do have to have a Seller Central account, though ($40 a month).

If you only have a few items to sell, it's not a good deal. It does lower your fees, but the break even is about 40 items per month.

Amazon is really more geared towards commodity-type products, not unusual or one-of-a-kind items. If you have only a few odd items, the best place is eBay or Craigslist.

By the way, it's worth noting that there are actually two types of merchant accounts on Amazon -- one for media items (books, CDs, DVDs, etc.) and one for non-media items (toys, electronics, etc.). The non-media type gives you much more latitude in terms of setting shipping fees, creating new listings, and so on. Some categories, like apparel, may be closed to new merchants temporarily and you may have to get permission from Amazon before selling in others.

You can create your own listing, but the problem is it would have to under the "everything else" category which is fine, but you are not going to get the kind of traffic, if it was listed under the proper category. They are real fussy when it comes to having items with the UPC codes. They are not as flexible as eBay is from that standpoint.
