Wordpress for ecommerce?

I just read elsewhere in the WF that you shouldn't use Wordpress for a sales site. Blog, yes. Dynamic content, yes... but not ecommerce.

Does anyone know where this comes from and if it's justified? I can't see where it would make the slightest difference to the sales process and I know there's an active trade in WP sales pages now.

I don't use WP for sales pages because there are usually just too many links. By the time I've stripped it down, it's way faster to just use an HTML template.

I have done experiments with word press versus HTML. Well, word press does not do as well in rankings as HTML pages. On many sites I have both an HTML main and a word press blog. Well, very few pages from word press blog rank high, but some HTML pages are position one. Not sure why this is. I am using SEO plug ins to help word press.
