How long till the con men get Haiti scams

How long do you think it will take till the con men of the net start ripping people off and making the WHITE HAT marketers look bad... My guess is it is already happening!

Started as soon as the news hit.

The easy way to handle it is to direct people to known charities with long histories. The Red Cross, Doctor Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, CARE, etc.

Even that won't always dispel the skepticism. I sent out Bob Serling's email on this, which involved only these kinds of charities, and got a couple of people accusing me of running a scam. Part of the process. Some folks don't read, some don't think, and some just want to yell at someone because they're tired of hearing about it.

I agree, I bet the scum bags started before the first tremor had finished

Some of them started before the tremors began. Ever heard of the UN?

Yes, sadly there will always be people who are going to take advantage of a tragedy as a way to make money. That will never change. Your best bet is always to go to a charity that is well known, so you don't have to worry about that kind of thing.

I've had a few emails with Haiti donations etc. in the subject line but I haven't opened them because I expect them to be scams.

My local news reported that thousands of people registered domain names with "Haiti" in them the day of the earthquake. A lot of those are legit sites, but sadly many are not. This is why people always say to only give to charities you already know to be reputable.

24 hours after the quake, I had 3 emails in my inbox all from the "UK Red Cross" with a subject line of Haiti Aid or something similar. I did not even bother opening them because I have no idea how the UK Red Cross could have gotten my email address.
