Laptop Computer - possible to get good one, monthly payments?

I'm in desperate need of a laptop computer, but I can't afford to pay the full price up front, and I have no credit card (got laid off last year, couldn't keep up with payments, they canceled it).

My brother just bought a $600 flat screen and only has to pay around $115/mo for five months or so. Do any of you know a way I can buy a decent laptop with monthly payments and not have to pay the full price up front?

Thank you greatly.

(P.S. I have no idea which section of the forum this belongs in!)

You should be able to. That's how I started out, paying £10 a month for a decent laptop (about $7) until I could afford to pay it all off in one go.

When you do make enough to pay it off, do it as quickly as possible because otherwise you end up paying a really high interest rate for a long time.

Try looking for credit deals at Best Buy. Last time I was there (I never shop for computers/laptops at B&M stores anymore, I always buy online now), they had 1 year 0% interest deals on laptops and computers, so this would be your best bet, assuming you can qualify for their financing.

If your credit is really shot, you could try those Rent a Center stores, I think just about anyone can get a computer there for low monthly payments.

Thanks for the tips so far!

Have any of you bought from HSN, or Gettington before? I called my bro and turns out he got "flex pay" from HSN, which is how he could afford his flat screen (we are both struggling financially right now...hence not being able to afford it full price upfront).

OZDUC, ha ha ha ha.... I just might

Take your brothers flat screen to a pawn shop when he's at work then go to best buy and pick up a PC for a couple hundred bucks.
When your brother gets home and freaks out tell him you will buy him one twice the size in a few months when you make it big in IM.
In the mean time he'll be able to help you with your new business as he will have a bit of spare time on his hands, not having a TV to watch.

@Marakatapolis - I mean this respectfully, so don't take this the wrong way. Why in the WORLD is your brother buying a $600 flat screen tv when you say that he is struggling financially?? Isn't there something better he could do with his money?

I asked him the same thing! He doesn't care that his diet currently consists of basically top ramon and beer, as long as he can watch a "kick ass tv" as he put it, "it's all good".

I have a six or seven year old giant box they used to call a TV! I have a tight budget, but a mobile computer would help me grow my online business faster, as I could then work more hours of the day. I could afford to spend a few hundred up front, I'm just stubbornly trying to find an even cheaper route if it's possible.

I think I should explore all possibilities first.

I suppose this is why some people will always be content working at a J.O.B as long as their essential needs (like tv and entertainment) are taken care of!

I take it that you're able to use your computer at work somehow then, since you're talking about using it to work more hours of the day?

Don't have a computer at work, stuck with a crappy "day" job right now. But I do get an hour long lunch ha ha.... an idea! However, I commute 40-60+ minutes both ways to/from work (I use public metro bus, it's way cheaper than paying to gas up my gas guzzling car). I also don't want to spend my entire free time sitting in my computer chair.

Don't any of you get a lot more work done with both a desktop PC, and a laptop computer?

As much crap as you will take for using them, I have a friend that works there. Most of the stuff is up to date, comes with a warranty, you can get a "decent" 90 days same as cash price, and even if you break it, infect it with virii, etc...they will fix it for free.

Walk in there and ask if you pay for 2 weeks if they will give you 2 weeks free - they will say yes. So, you can get the computer for about $50 for the first month.

Mark, I see that you're in Seattle. Here's a step by step guide for you.

Check with some of the large organizations there, such as the university, Microsoft, public school system, etc. to see if they offer surplus sales to liquidate their old computer inventory. Look in Craigslist locally, and on eBay and the web, for used laptops - ideally, refurbished. Check if Freegeek has a Seattle branch. If not, it might be worth the drive to Portland. Stop by coffee shops in Redmond, Bellevue, and newer trendy lofts. Chat with people with laptops asking if they know of anyone with an older laptop computer for sale. Put up flyers or cards at these coffee shops and yuppie food markets - Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc.

Get a used Thinkpad, ideally refurbished with a warranty if possible. If anything does fail it will probably go out within the first couple of months for you. The Thinkpad line works well, has a superb keyboard, and was designed to be easy to maintain and replace parts for companies to keep them running. If all you're doing is web surfing and some light use of office software, anything from a T23 on up is fine. Think 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB hard drive, Windows XP and you're set.

Get a backup hard drive and you're set.

Get the least expensive model that's adequate for a couple of months. If you have any marketing successes at all, your business will soon be able to buy you a better machine.

If your credit card was canceled for non-payment - your chance of financing are pretty slim. Rental centers aren't cheapest but they don't require credit either.

If you have some money put back you'd be better off checking HP refurbs or dell's clearance (great deals there last time I looked) or another option is to first check the pawn shops in your area.

It's amazing what people are pawning these days (out of jobs - need money).

Also, local newspaper ads are worth checking.

The laptop i used for 4 years give or take was a barter deal. I built a website for a local business man and he gave me a laptop. Perhaps you could do something similar.

Cool idea. Bartering is way under-used these days.

I still think your best bet is the Rent a Centers. If you're really strapped for cash, this is where you'll be able to get a decent new computer that you can use for monthly payments until you start earning enough money through IM to get yourself a decent laptop, which shouldn't be too hard as you now have lots of choices when it comes to brand new laptops under $500.
