My SugerDaddy bought me Lynda.com - what course to take first?

My sugar daddy gave me a subscription to Lynda.com - so, despite relatively soggy brain cells - I might be able to learn some web design skills.

But looking at the courses available, I'm overwhelmed.

I just want to get better at skills which will help me in internet marketing.

For example: Building a simple webpage to begin with and then maybe graduating to something else that's highly useful.

So far, I've only learned how to put up WordPress sites - but sometimes, WP doesn't seem like the way to go.

In fact, I'm currently working on implementing this WSO which seems to recommend building non-WP sites (simple, one page sales pages) because they are apparently easier to transfer to the new owner (WSO is about building and than Flippa'ing your site)

WSO does not go into site creation (it's assumed we have that already down - LOL)

So, to begin with, I'm looking for info on building a basic site with Header across the top, a page with one or two columns down the middle, (fixed width with plain color on either side) and no navigation. Will HTML course be sufficient, or should I expand on that?

Where do I begin to learn how to create such a beast and what course should I take, obviously, HTML is on the menu, but what about XHTML or Joomla or CSS or others?

http://www.Lynda.com

If you could only take one course in Lynda.com (this is you now, not me) - what would YOU take? And if you want to recommend what I should take - that's great also.

Thanks,
MostlyHarmless

    Hi MostlyHarmless,

It depends on what you feel you need to learn the most.

Lynda.com has some great training videos. I spent some time last year going through all of their Adobe Fireworks ones so I could improve my graphic design skills.

Not to do graphic design professionally mind you... there's just times where I need to crop a photo or change the background on a graphic so it blends nicely on a page... stuff like that. Before I was clueless how to do it and had outsource 100% of it. Now I can quickly handle the minor stuff and choose to outsource the bigger stuff like mini-site graphic design.

The first thing I worked hard on learning when I came online was learning a web design software program. At the time, I chose Dreamweaver MX2004 because it was the best tool. Expensive but could do everything. Spent a lot of time struggling to learn it before I turned to video training like Lynda.com's.

That definitely shortened the learning curve for me.

So I'd suggest learning a web design program of your choice through Lynda.com. If you can build or modify your own web pages, then you'll probably never need to hire a web master for your business.

As for me... the next training at Lynda.com will probably be CSS and I'll tackle that in a few months from now.

    Hope that helps,

    Mike

HTML and CSS are good to know. Honestly, however, I spent too much time in the beginning learning web design and less learning internet marketing than I should have. In the end I chose to learn how to maximize what I can do with Wordpress and the existing plugins. I also use my HTML and CSS skills (plus some PHP) to make things work the way I want them, but thats less than 20% of the time.

I just wouldn't get too hung up on learning web design. So many things in IM seem to buck the design trends that are out there. As an offline marketer I end up making lots of changes to client sites because they were built to look nice, not convert. I make changes to make it convert, and some times this flies in the face of what a designer intended, or what they learned in "design" school. Web designers don't care much about marketing IMO.

I would start with the triad {Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Flash} start with level one courses. Then as you advance learn more complex ones.

First learn HTML and CSS with Dreamweaver, then Wordpress.
Then start with adapting Worpdress themes, changing CSS and images.

Then learn Photoshop, and go to web design galleries such as csselite.com and gradually you will learn about the web design, to make a complete good looking web page from scratch.

1-2 years will be enough to become a pro.

OK - I started XHTML class today. Yawn - but, I guess that comes with the programming.

Lynda.com doesn't have any decent Wordpress training (unless you count a tutorial for using Wordpress.com)

These days there are so many click & drag website builders including the Yahoo Sitebuilder option which totally removes ALL the need to have any website building knowledge except an idea of HOW you want your site to look.

I put up a couple of pages just to test the system at Free Website It's so simple I'm looking to transfer all of my websites there in the future.

I'm an aging techno-phobe and I'm so glad that website building is heading this way now, taking the whole process out of the hands of scamming, overpriced webmasters, and putting the ability back into our own hands.

    Good luck, Pete :-)

Even if your using wordpress it's important to know html, css and php so you can alter the theme to make things work right.

Then learn photoshop and some video courses.

      Good Luck,
      Donna
