I think you might want to try open office. I haven't used it in a while, but I believe you can covert word docs and files created with open office to pdfs.

Openoffice is okay as a pdf converter, but I've found that when I open up some documents that were created in word, the formating gets messed up a bit.

I use PrimoPDF which is free and works really well.

If you're asking how to convert your Word file to PDF, just go to File > Print and there's an option to save the file as a PDF. There's no additional software required outside of MS Word.

PDFCreator works best for me. Products such as CutePDF etc i found could not render graphics very well. I can't fault PDFCreator.

If you upload a word document for instance to scribd.com (gives the option of making it private), then you can download a copy as a PDF from scribd.

I've tried PrimoPDF and OpenOffice. I didn't like PrimoPDF because whatever links I put in my doc ended up unclickable in the PDF.

OpenOffice is okay, just that as someone mentioned, the formatting gets messed up when I open a doc that was typed and saved in MS Word.

I'm currently looking for a free Doc to PDF converter that disables the copy and paste function in the PDF because I don't want people to copy the text in the PDF. (From what I know) OpenOffice doesn't have. Any recommendations? And one that also allows clickable text and image links?

My question is this.....If you are already proficient in using MS Word, then why not simply make a switch over to OpenOffice Writer and use that to create your documents to begin with and then use the "create PDF" function directly from that program?

This would eliminate any weird conversions when using OpenOffice Writer and trying to generate a PDF from a pre-existing Word .doc file.

Alternatively, you can open up the Word .doc inside OpenOffice Writer and make adjustments before you hit the "create PDF" button. But of course this is going to mean more work on your end.

So, I have to agree with the majority here, and as a long time user of OpenOffice Writer, telling you to go with OpenOffice. It's 100% free, no expiry, no annoying nag screens, etc. Just the fully functioning suite of tools comparable to those within MS Office.

I used to have OpenOffice, but I noticed that it causes my com to lag even more. Also, one thing which really put me off was that in Word, I can get synonyms by right clicking on the text, but the process of getting synonyms is less convenient in OpenOffice.

I've since switched back to Word.

Not saying that OpenOffice is bad. I quite like it, apart from the 2 issues I mentioned above, but those 2 issues put me off enough to revert to Word.

As other have said, there are many of these.

If your document has links, make sure you use a PDF convertor that makes your links clickable. Not all do that.

I use openoffice all the time for this, it has an option to export as PDF.

@kendrickyi Have you tried after the deadline? They have an extension for open office, I don't think it works quite as well as MS word yet but it quite a nice free alternative.

I saw once a product that stops people copying your PDFs. It can be set up so that you have to register a copy of a PDF, one per computer, but I can't remember what it's called.

I create my documents in Open Office and then just save it as a pdf. I also open Word docs with it and haven't had any messed up formatting with it.

Hey Ray,

I don't know if it has already been mentioned in the thread or not, but I (because I'm on a mac most of the time) write my documents in Microsoft Word, put in all the images, change everything to the final format and also create the background graphics (you can simply put an image to the header and/or footer section in Word and there are not restrictions as to how big the image should be, so you can copy in an A4 image and it fills all the background space). I then save the .docx file as a PDF and the only thing I do afterwards is I add links in Adobe Acrobat Pro (somehow the links from the .docx document disappear everytime). This is the way I create my PDF documents and e-books.

If you want to use any PDF converter, ensure its prevents readers from copying from it. This will prefer plagiarizing of parts of your e-book. If you don't mind them copying it, then you have no reason to be fussy.

I use Nitro PDF reader. It is free but if you like you can upgrade to the PRO version with some dollars.
