Newbie question about dot com vs. dot net

Hey warriors, relative newbie here! Making a commitment to start going into IM full time.. Very exited to join this promising community.

I'm looking to specialize in e-commerce/drop shipping
(I know some of you aren't keen on drop-shipping, but I've already investing some good time on this area and I'm looking to see where this goes..)

Setting up the website with joomla/virtuemart. I'm learning a lot about seo these days.. just bought market samurai and I'm having a ball with it..

First question: Looking for a domain name with good seo qualities/relative some of the keywords I've chosen. I can't seem to find a good .com.. Do you guys think I can get a dot net or dot org etc?.. is a dot com so important? What are the cons of not getting a dot com (if any)?

Thanks for any advice you can also offer on anything else I've mentioned.
Cheers

-LS

I think the SEO quality differences between .com, .net and .org are negligible.

    CONS:
    1. People are get used to type the com, by default. Let's say I make YouTube.org. Would you remember it's a .org and not a .com? I know a Romanian site (.ro) that is very popular. Someone made a .com site, with the same domain name, and he parked it. Needless to say, even I go to that .com site, from time to time, but not to admire the parking ads.

    2. Some people don't trust others extensions.

    3. Some extensions are VERY expensive, like .tt

    PRO:
    1. If you want your company's name in the domain name, and the .com is not free, you can go for other extensions.

    2. You can get a .info very cheap (about $1) if you just want to test an idea.

Some people say that not having a .com extension damage your SEO efforts. I don't know, but 50% of the searches I make list WikiPedia.org in the top position in SERPs

A .org or .net site is fine. Most people follow links or bookmarks. Remembering a web address isn't near as important as it's been made out to be unless you're going to advertise offline.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

In my experience, there has been absolutely no difference as far as Search engine rankings are concerned, with domain extensions .com, .org, .net. One doesn't have an advantage over another.

.com, .net, .org... all of these domain extensions are worldwide known as "international" (if I can express like that) and is nothing wrong with them. About SEO: the domain itself much more matters, not the domain extension.

I recently registered a domain extension .eu bytheway =)
