Larger generalized site or smaller specialized site?

Which type of site do you think is a better way to go for selling physical products and will be more search engine friendly? A single, more general site/domain name, with lots of sub categories or having an individual site for each specific category? Thank you.

    I personally would go after one area at a time with many different sites, especially if you can get them on the same hosting account. Reason being is that it is difficult to compete with the big boys if you are trying to do everything at once as they have probably been doing it years, by going after one very specialised area hough you may be able to dominate and then move to another and another...and constantly build backlinks through your entire network of sites.
