I just paid a graphic designer to design a logo, he came up with a fantastic design but one of my friends swears he has seen that logo somewhere else, only he cannot remember where! and to tell you the truth even I think it is not original at all. What I am looking for is a resource/tool that can check for similar designs, just like perhaps copyscape.com can check for a copied article perhaps you know of a tool which can check for duplicates?! please let me know thanks |

It is also possible that your logo is not totally original, but is perhaps based on a familiar logo? Maybe your designer found it online and is now passing it off as his/her own design? It is really difficult to check that. There is no centralized copyrighted "logo" database that is searchable using only a picture -- at least not yet. Maybe the first thing you could do is post a link to the logo? Maybe exposing it to other Warriors may lead somebody to knowing something about your specific logo. OR As painful as this is, maybe doing a "logo" search via Google and seeing if something pops up (or if your logo is more specific, like a spider or whatever, you could search "spider logos" for example and hope something pops up. OR You can just be happy with your logo and use it and not worry about where it came from (I do not know how difficult this option will be for you, but if your suspicions prove to be correct and the real owner of the logo were to come forward, you could loose a lot of money if you had to change logos and brand because of this mistake). | |

I have never heard of any companies providing this service, but if you do come across one, please share with the rest of us.

I've heard of some graphic designers using one logo as a template and spewing out tons of other logos off of that one template. There was a pretty infamous case where someone did that and it made the news. They sold the logo to a city that was looking for a new logo. Turns out another city was using it already, same designer too. I guess getting it in writing about the exclusivity of the project should be made, so you have some sort of legal recourse.. if it is copied by the designer. Also I'd keep any emails & conversations I had with the graphic designer just in case.. |

This post caught my attention because this also happened to me one time. I used Getafreelancer to hire a graphic artist for a website header and "software box". When he gave me the images, they looked great. At first, I was happy with his work, paid him, then gave him a positive rating (10/10). It wasn't till about two weeks later when I discovered that he "borrowed" an image from one of my competitors and used it as part of my site identity. Not cool. When I confronted him, he acknowledge it and offered to design me another graphic, which he did but it was too late for me to change the rating. Bottom line, you may want to check and with some of your competition to make sure your designer does not "borrow" images. Just my two cents. Michael Cruz |
