Local Vs. Global monthly search. What does it mean?

I don't quite understand what is the difference between local and global monthly search in Google keywords tool. What is the difference and what do you use? and why?

I know everyone has their own preference but if you could explain why, that would be a great help. THanks.

There is an option using which you can set the results to target a particular country. Let's say you have set it to USA. In that situation 'local' means results gathering from Google's default server which is US server. Global means the rest.

It changes once you set it to different country.

I use the default and live in U.S. So is global worth anything? If there is "not enough data" on local but 1000 on global, will i still get visitors then, but from other countries?

It depends on your needs. Let's say that you want to target US visitors, then Global search volume is not important and vice verse.

Yes, you will still get visitors

so this has nothing then to do with the actual specific area that I'm in ie "detroit" or "boston" rather its country specific lol...that doesn't seem very local to me how can we see what searches a specific area has??

I think the only way to know about searches in a specific area is to add that area to your keyword.

Ie, Auto sales panama city beach

    or "detroit gremlin"
