What mistake(s) have you made?

Dear Warriors,

I have had this thread before. It had good responses. But there was problem with my pen name. So now I supposed I have to adapt and choose a pen name that cause no irritate to anyone.

What was it you ask? I used a very respectful author name. A foreign name here in my tropical country - Og Mandino. I used his as pen name because of this...

"Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet. With patience you can bear up under any adversity and survive any defeat. With patience you can control your destiny and have what you will. Patience is the key to contentment, for you and for those who must live with you. To be brave without patience can kill you. To be ambitious without patience can destroy the most promising of careers. Patience is power. Employ it to stiffen your spirit, sweeten your temper, stifle your anger, bury your envy, subdue your pride, bridle your tongue, restrain your hands, and deliver you whole, in due time, to the life you deserve."
Very cool huh? I know

So... Now we go into essence I want to talk about. It's chinese wisdom inside a red packet I got from Go Green Festival that said

If you take others' mistakes as your own, you'll avoid a lot of them.
If you forgive others' mistakes as you forgive yourself, it become more easier to establish good relations.
Holy Emperor of Pure Water (Bai Shui Sheng Di)
And some of warriors advice people to fail fast.

Fail as fast as possible.
(I know the meaning is getting us taking action)

I've been thinking if I get the feeling of others' mistakes, I'd save a lot of energy and time from getting waste.

I've made several mistakes myself.

*Not focus enough, led astray
*Buy WSO and didn't take action
*Learning, learning, learning but not doing
*Use pen name of a very respectful person IN his place :p

I suppose the first three are the most wanted culprits.

So... what is yours?

You mention the main problem that most people have, and that was my problem for years, not taking action. I think those of us who learn, learn, learn and don't do know its an issue for us. Perhaps we're afraid it won't work and then we'll be depressed, but if you don't get in the game you'll never succeed.

Another mistake I have made, waiting to join the War Room here on the Warrior Forum. If you haven't yet paid the minimal fee to do so, go do it now. The resources are amazing.

Yeah... Afraid it won't work and think to much. By time goes by, You aware that you haven't do anything.

That is why most warrior told us to fail as fast as possible.

By the way, here another lesson from other fellow warriors. Took it from the previous post.

Got discouraged and gave up on stuff.

Not following through with every step on a method thus making it almost useless.

Buying a $1000 coaching program and losing money on the methods rather than making money on them.

    etc. etc.

I have made many mistakes, but very soon I am thinking of starting a warrior forum blog to tell all about my successes to encourage others.
There are more... But I think it would be better to give it bit by bit.

Oh I've made a lot of those mistakes too - spending too much money on guides, and not enough time on implementing them, letting people take advantage of me, not following through on things...

There are so many mistakes. But I don't regret *any* of my mistakes. I see these early stages as a real learning exercise, and something that couldn't really have been avoided, in my opinion. Without these failures I wouldn't know what I know now!

Ah mistakes - I like to call them learning experiences.

Here are some of my many learning experiences

          * Focusing on too many different things and not getting anywhere
          * Hiring a team of programmers and not keeping track of them (basically they barely did any work and I was most likely paying them while they worked on other people's software)
          * When dealing with programmers always get a total price negotiation rather than hourly rates or monthly. (If they're paid monthly programmers don't have an incentive to work fast)
          * Spending too much time on social media instead of paying for traffic to test conversions.
          * Buying product after product without taking action - you truly learn when you take action and do it.
          * Test small then scale up. I posted out 50 000 flyers and lost a fair chunk of money. Test small then scale up slowly so you don't lose your profit.

          Hope this helps

I bought a manual from Chriss Cobb and decided to be an affiliate as I thought it was a very good program ( I was certainly impressed to be honest).

Seeing as I wasn´t fluent at all with adwords and web design I hired a small company to do a couple of things for me, namely a squeeze page, an adwords campaign and a bit of promotion for the website to direct traffic to it.

The first mistake I made was not following the instructions on the manual to the letter. Chriss spoke about how with adwords you are testing things in real time and can and must make your changes quickly. The guy I hired kept telling me to allow a few days or even a week before evaluating results and making changes (as in keywords and ads). because I trusted him to be more knowledgeable than me I followed suit ignoring Chriss's advice of not letting any under performing ad roll for more than 48 hours, even 24 if there was some traffic getting into it. Those days (weeks) I trusted that guy wa smoney down the drain as with lower ctr the ad costs started going up.

I also allowed him to take more time than necessary creating the squeeze page, which shouldn´t have taken as long as it did as i provided the graphics and text and he only had to add the form. He probably had more commitments and persuaded me to allow for adwords to work its magic before I did the squeeze page. Tons of wasted time because I couldn´t put his mind into the frame of following me ( my manuals instructions rather).

Later on I started running the adwords campaign myself. It was bringing in the traffic but conversions were just 1%. problem being I had paid that guy and my campaign in sterling but was converting at dollars wich were pretty much 2 to the pound at the time, so I lost money.

Lessons: Cost control, get your employee to do what you want him to do and not what he thinks is best.

Later on I went into a second adwords campaign for the same course which I managed myself from the start. I was ranking only for Google searches, nothing to do with the content network. My cost per clic was rather reasonable as my ctr was up to 12% in some ads ( about 8% on average) and I was budgeting ok.

Then I decided ( after reading on the interwebs) to allow my ads to show in the content network. Cost per click went up like mad as my CTR tanked big time.

Lesson: If you don´t know how to use a feature, stay away from it until you learn or find a person with a succesful track record of using it.

Wow, this is all so useful for a newbie like me, thanks for sharing your experience so candidly. My mistake was that I only just registered today after buying a few ebooks in the last 3 months! Better late than never I guess.

I am new to internet marketing and seeing all those 'mistakes' (or experiences) in one place is very encouraging - makes me realise we're all only human - and I really want to avoid the Nr 1 of not taking action. So since I have a day off today, I have decided that by tonight, I will have created my action plan to "build my list", and identified 2 products I want to use as freebie on my "squeeze page" (that's all the jargon I've learned so far

  • My biggest mistake was not to concentrate on a method or tactic.
Getting distracted and trying other ways instead of focusing on one strategy.
Because in IM when having an idea you should stick with it and stay focused. Follow this strategy and keep on track.
A thousand other opportunities will come accross your mind but this might affect the way you are following..

    Stay focused!

I just by coincidence brought to hostgator today. One fee per plan didn't impress me very much. Don't take me wrong it's indeed good offer. What impress me more is green computing they have taken.

Hostgator is powered by renewable energy for all servers. They got REC (Renewable Energy Credit). Not much hosting provider has gone this far. Viva Hostgator!

I have that sense. Scared of being ripped off is a good sense to have, just read a post that talk about what you concern. Lot of scam out there, but there are a lot of opportunities too. How I overcome this is to choose mentor/product that have good reputation. Just go with that match your interest and skill.

Look around here first (internet marketing discussion) for a while to get the picture.

          Wish u luck,
          oggobis

Oh boy, let's go for a ride...

1.) My very first SERIOUS project: I set up an IM blog and continued to work on it every day - I logged on with clear sights, and got things done: monetized with Clickbank and Adsense, not to mention building a list. I didn't even heavily promote it, but I managed about a combined $100 from Clicbank/Adsense, even though I had a grand total of 4 subscribers and my traffic was basically nil. Apparently I was doing something right, so if I had two brain cells back then I would've improved and scaled it up, right? Of course, but nooooooooo...

2.) I got distracted by the idea of running a membership site. Membership sites are FANTASTIC of course, don't get me wrong - but I overcomplicated the process, overworking myself into counterproductivity and not sticking to the deadlines I'd set for myself. Even though I may have been able to pull it off, the project was floundering and a financially devastating event killed it.

3.) At that point, I really needed the cash, but couldn't rely on Clickbank, etc, to come through for me in time, so I resorted to freelancing. I never meant it to be long-term anyway, but two things happened: it went smoothly for awhile, then I got a really nasty cold for two weeks, which set me back unbelievably far in my already piling projects. Even though I physically recovered, my freelancing never fully did. I had to let a client go because I was not only dragging him down too much, but knew there was no way I'd be able to catch him up in a reasonable amount of time.

Since that time, though, I took up PLR rewriting, and even though I'm just barely getting started it's a hell of a lot easier than ghostwriting from scratch.

I also resurrected the old blog and put a new spin on it. Instead of general Internet Marketing reviews, I write about my own personal progress. I'm not done revamping it yet, but when I do get done, this time I'm making sure it takes off the way it should.

I believe there is no such things as "mistake" , it's healthy, and it's suppose to be how it is now. It's our will. What we do, it's not a mistake, it's what we want, it's the road we took, it's our destiny.

While not implementing was somewhat of a problem in the beginning, I don't take full responsibility for that. I bought numerous "methods" and after reading them was disappointed in the content and therefore, did not implement.

That was probably my biggest mistake. Believing that someone, for a fee, would hand me the blueprint to success and the money would roll in (while I was sleeping, nonetheless).

When I became disillusioned with that road to riches and began to build my own blueprint, was when I began to see success. Everyone has strengths and skills that they can capitalize on, and if you don't, it's time you get some.

My early methods were not sustainable business models. My own blueprint is a blueprint to build long-term, sustainable business(es). Short term, flash in the pan methods are a little fun occasionally, but they never last and then you have to come up with a new one. It's far easier and less stressful, for me at least, to build a long-term business... to build quality products.

These have probably all been mentioned in some form but.

    Not building a list sooner.

    Not taking action every day

I'm not sure how to describe it but there's some weird kind of inertia that seems to kick in just as I'm about to implement a new plan. Suddenly I find myself worrying and fretting over the tiniest details in some sort of self-sabotage procrastination spiral.

Giving up too soon on my own product when sales stalled. Trying to make money with other peoples products when I had idea for more of my own products I should have developed. Not using my strengths like writing and outsourcing stuff like website building. Surfing around the forum and internet looking for easy ways to make money, when I had a taste of what would actually work and just needed to do more of it. Being impatient and not sticking to things long enough.

Countless stocks I sold too early, but I don't think this is what you asked for.

One of the main mistakes I made was simply following gurus who were only after taking my money. I'm seeking to correct that by, for one thing, following people who appear to be giving good value, judging by the Feedback here.

Yup yup. As for me I choose the one who have good reputation and another check-list is "after sales support" even just for email or PM.

If they have good value to offer it doesn't matter to barter it with my dough.

      Same here

Plus in my early days I had a "build it and they'll come" mentality. The phases of my journey so far:
      1. Build it then they'll come ... they didn't
      2. Get rich quick ... i didn't
      3. Make a little money for a lot of effort ... i did!
      4. Learn the trade to be better at what I do ... i am
      5. (Future: Make more and more money for less and less effort ... hopefully)
And this is where I am now, I can increase my income each month a little.

Being overly cautious (some may call it procrastinating ;_)
Taking action and then stalling before completing a plan
Recreating plan after plan and not implementing 'cos I might have missed something
Being sucked in by the 'just takes an hour a day' mythology (maybe AFTER you've put in the 200 hours to get everything in place and running!
Always being in learning mode and not doing
Grabbing every shiny object that came my way to find 'the secret' and put all the pieces of the puzzle together
Getting overwhelmed and walking away for days on end
    So many more ...

Gee, I feel so much better now!!

Yes these are the most common mistakes I've seen and made myself.

Another is expecting to get rich overnight with some new information instead of taking consistent action with the information you have and building your online assets (your list, contacts etc).

But failing to take action that can conceivably bring you the results you want is the most common mistake hands down.

Getting to narrow minded with the Net.

Spending far too much time working "in my business and not ON it"

All the mistakes mentioned before and a lot more of my own.

The biggest of all: I guess spend too much time in front of my computer, reading, learning, writing, surfing, drawing, posting, blogging, tweeting, recording, uploading, downloading, googling, researching, and let my belly grow as big as a watermelon
