    I'm a little dense here.

Do you mean send from you website? Do you mean from inside your hosting Control Panel? From your PC. To cell phones or to ???

I've done a fair amount of research on communicating between the web and text messaging for one of my projects.

The service that you are asking for (as far as I can tell) is an SMS gateway. It will accept messages/commands from your website and send out your text messages, not too much unlike a third-party email service like aweber.

Stuff like this comes with a per-message cost of about 3 or 4 cents. For that reason, it's not practical for my project so I've never used a gateway service.

What I have done, however, is take advantage of the email-to-SMS service that most every major mobile phone provider has to offer. With this, your mobile phone most likely has an email address like 4445551234@ msg.myprovider.com and any message sent to that address shows up as a text message on your phone.

You can find lists online of the major providers and the corresponding address structure.

      George,

The sending part is not necessarily as important as the receiving part. I am trying to see if there is a software as a service type program (web based). I am wanted to explore alternative options besides acquiring my own equipment.

I need to generate results in real time from the reception of text messages..

      RJP,

SMS Gateway are great the one concern about that method is the lag time they would have on delivery. Is there an SMS service that you know that has guarantees on their transmission times

Hey Ryan, I've also been stuck on a potential project because of the cost of SMS messages. I like your idea of sending it as an e-mail, may be a workable solution.

I was wondering if you had or could point me to some lists of the address structures for the major US & Canadian carriers.

      Thanks

SMS gateways can usually receive a text and transfer to your webserver via an API fairly quickly. If the number is NOT ported, then it is usually within a second or two. Ported numbers can take a little longer. This is my experience in the U.S., I hear GSM in Europe can be faster with ported numbers.

Gmail accounts, (as well as other email accounts) can send and recieve text messages to cell phones and other text devices. I do it all the time.

You can start the process by texting from your gmail account so others could reply to your gmail account. Conversly people can orginate the conversation and you can reply to them.

You can also text with google voice. Google voice will store unlimited text message, as many as you ever send or recieve.
