Can anyone duplicate the success of a Big Guy?

Anthony Robbins calls it modeling when you learn how someone else has achieved something and do the same. If someone else has achieved something you should be able to almost duplicate that thing if you do the same things they did. There are exceptions of course. You can't duplicate proprietary properties, etc.

In theory you should be able to duplicate the success of anyone in marketing if you think like they do, work like they do, learn the same distinctions they do, and pretty much do the same things they do.

Do you agree with this theory ?

Absolutely! But I think the first thing that comes into play is MINDSET.
Anyone can do anything if they have the right mindset.

I definitely do Scott, just that I find that far too many of us neglected one very important part of the whole modeling idea which is the thinking process of the one we are modeling.

I personally feel that this is the key thing why no matter how many courses, videos or ebooks we go through, we'll never be able to create exact results without bumping here and there first.

      Regards,
      Darren

I agree with that for the most part. Certain things we can't physically do or aren't programmed to do. I do agree that mindset is huge in being good at whatever you want to be good in. Example. I want to bench 3 plates, I'm at 2, I will get there through practice and always focusing on the goal.

I fully agree with it Scott. Obviously there are physical limitations in some cases. I look at it like footprints in the snow. If someone has got from A-B and I want to do the same, if I follow his footprints then in theory I should get to point B also.

I agree that if something works, you should be able to duplicate. However there is a time factor. If you try to model something that is outdated it may not work. It can be too late waiting just a couple of weeks. Think Halloween.

So duplicating yes but not just blindly.

This theory has a lot of merits. While we may not be able to reproduce an exact copy of all their accomplishments, by mimicking their mindset, action and steps that they've undertaken we should be able to get a reasonable facsimile of it. I'm not denying that it's possible to have success without modeling someone, but why reinvent the wheel and take the tortuous path when it's all pretty much mapped out for you?

Yes, modeling works, in every endeavor I can think of...

As other posters have suggested, you're not copying anyone, you're modeling their behavior, their mindset, their working habits, and ethics.

If you keep doing what YOU do, you'll keep getting what you're already getting.

Model what someone else does, and you'll get something different. The challenge is to make the commitment, and DO it, which is easier said than done. :-)

However, even if you model just a tiny part of a successful person's process, you'll get good results, so make the commitment, and get started...

Tony Robbins is a great example, because (from memory) he tells you exactly what you need to do to be successful.

I still have my doubts about duplicating some else's success.

You may be able to mimick their business module but unless your willing to take the same falls and go through the same learning curve...your not going to meet the same success.

I agree...to a degree. What I mean is some things can only be duplicated to a small degree and will not approach the success of the original. Tony Robbins is a good example. If you give me the words to one of his seminars and put me in front of the audience I seriously doubt if I could inspire people the way he does. His enthusiasm is contagious. I'm far too reserved to be able to duplicate his success.

Credibility cannot be duplicated so much either. Tony and I could say the same things, but people will find him more credible than I for several reasons, and probably even on topics that I know more about because he has a "presence" about him I could never hope to duplicate.

That doesn't mean I think modeling yourself or your business after a proven success isn't a good idea, because it sure can be. Just don't try to be someone other than yourself. Personality cannot be duplicated without being a phony, and a good many people will see right through that.

Success often leaves clues and it is said that "success breeds success", so modelling and following in the path of those who have been successful is generally a proven way to achieving your goals.

Of course let's not forget about the hard work and effort which needs to be put in to ensure you achieve your goals. Knowing what to do is one thing but actually taking action is something completly different and where many people fall down when they attempt to model another's success.

    Yes and no.

It depends entirely on what you are expecting to duplicate, obviously people cannot come along and duplicate Bill Gates success in quite the way he did it because it is all sewn up, he has the monopoly with IE so although I can come along with firefox and opera and whine to the courts that someone has an unfair advantage like that I will always be struggling to grab market share.

Now, if an entirely new medium came along or a previously undiscovered facet of computing I would still be at a disadvantage to the big boys but I could still dominate.

Just look at Twitter and Jaiku as your example.
