Yahoo Answers Plagiarism - Question & Warning

I guess I shouldn't be shocked or surprised, but I am. I'm not a big player on Yahoo Answers, but another one of mine was chosen best answer, so, out of curiosity, I doublechecked my profile and looked at one of the questions where I didn't get best answer.

As I was reading the answer that was chosen for best answer, it sounded VERY familiar. So I scrolled down to find the answer I had posted. Surprise! They were identical.

So this person (who, by the way, is a "Top Contributor" with over 75,000 points), flat out copied my answer, and hers was subsequently chosen as best answer. It's easy to tell that mine was posted first - mine shows as being posted 2 weeks ago; hers shows as being posted 1 week ago.

In case anyone wants to check it out, here's the link to the question:
How do I use my email adress with twitter when its already taken? - Yahoo! Answers

It shouldn't bug me this much, and I don't "need" another best answer, but damn it, there's a principle here. [sarcasm] I think I learned it in kindergarten, or Sunday School, or something like that. Something about not stealing?? Yeah, that's it. [\sarcasm]

Anyway, I reported her for plagiarism, but here's my question. What, if anything, would you guys do about it? And, do you know if Yahoo actually does anything about this stuff?

And here's my warning. In case you weren't aware, apparently this goes on all the time at Yahoo Answers (as I discovered after a google search), so be sure to keep an eye on your answers.

If I stumbled across it I'd probably report it to see if Yahoo does anything about it, but beyond that I would do something more productive. If it were content from my website I'd probably be a little more concerned, but for content I donated to Yahoo I just wouldn't worry about every drooling wannabe that's too lazy or stupid to think up their own answers. Yes, it's annoying and it's not right, but I just think there are better uses of my time.

You can't stop that kind of thing. I mainly use Y!A for the link juice & traffice exposure anyways.

Yahoo answer links are no follow.

Even if they are no follow, they still give you link juice.

It's true. Matt Cutts has said Google still passes a little link juice through nofollow links. Some search engines ignore the nofollow completely so you'll get full link juice. Ignoring link opportunities because of nofollow tags is just wasting link opportunities.

    I'd ignore it.

It's obviously someone who's desperate and trying to game their system - people like that aren't worth worrying about.

Just take the compliment that they liked your answer enough to copy it and so did the person asking the question.

Since your words were chosen - you did what you intended (helped someone) - don't let the opportunity to feel bad about it last too long.

With 75,000 points do you really think they have any other kinda of life outside of yahoo answers!

Why waste your time with them? report them and leave it as that.

Wow - the person didn't even attempt to disguise ("spin") your answer. Just straight copy and paste. And since there are only a few answers total, the copy/paste is so obvious. That takes guts -- and stupidity.

Anyway, I agree with those who've said that now that you've reported it, move on. (Although it sure is tempting to leave a comment, isn't it?) It's frustrating and all that, but spending another moment of energy on this just hurts you, not her.

    Cheers,

You're all absolutely right that it's not worth my time and energy (and I wasn't really planning to go beyond reporting it). I thought of emailing her, but if she's the type to do this, she might just retaliate in some manner. I feel better just venting to you guys about it.

      Done. Over it. Fini.

I get a few hits from it, but its not the be-it-all-end-all thou..

I don't care for how people can disagree with you in their answer, to me that isn't giving the best answer possible then.. They're just disagreeing with you and not even really giving a relevant answer..

And you'd have to answer quite a few answers before they actually allow you to post your URL on your replies.

I do agree with you, its not really the best way to get traffic and perhaps just a waste of time in the long run..

Oh...you can email her? I'd have some fun! I'd email her (from a throwaway email account so she can't identify you and retaliate if that's a concern) and tell her something like this:
I know you've been copying other people's content and pasting it in as your own answers at Yahoo Answers. That's illegal, unethical, selfish, lazy and stupid! If you keep doing it I will expose you as a fraud. Just grow up.
...or something to that effect. Who knows, maybe it will scare her enough that she quits. If not, it will probably make her day.

Don't like that, how about this:

Open an account like Yahoo.Answers.Monitor@yahoo.com and email her and tell her she's been put on a watch list because she's been posting other people's content. Tell her if she keeps doing it her account could be shut down. Don't claim to represent Yahoo, just let the email address give her that impression.

Ooooh, now that sounds like fun, Dennis! I hadn't thought of doing it anonymously from a throw-away address. Mind if I plagiarize your brilliant text for the email?

Help yourself. I added a second idea while you were posting your plagiarization request. You might want to check it too.

Becky, you caught me so I admit it. Once in a while you just have to make your own fun.

I would like to point out though, that I don't initiate being "naughty," it's always in response to someone that is naughty first. I also want to point out that it's not my fault, I was conditioned to be this way from birth. People really should stop saying "Dennis the Menace" to little kids.

LOL - if I ever lose my mind and get in serious trouble that will be my defense!
