Ok, so I have a database of 8,000,000 online subscribers (Yes it's TRUE, but what do I do with it?!)

Hi Warriors,

Apologies for not being around recently. I have been secretly working on a new piece of software that will literally EXPLODE your profits (but I'm keeping hush hush on that for the time being - sorry!)

Anyway... Back in December, I sold one of my websites to a fantastic business woman in the field of IM (she's been in many marketing magazines and is very reputable online). Anyway, long story short, as part of the deal I was given a database 8MILLION subscribers in size which has been built up through her purchase of many companies. Good deal, I say.

However, I have simply NO IDEA what to do with the list? So, I'm coming back to my WF home to ask my wonderful friends on here:

What would you do?

I would really appreciate your advice, ideas and knowledge on the subject!

Thanks,

Daniel

PS. If anyone has ideas of how to market to this list and would like to contact me (perhaps regarding a JV?), then please send me a PM.

Thanks again.

You could send a measly 100,000 over to me. I'll look after them, promise

Start sub-listing it into segments you can market to.

At the least send a hard pitch as soon as possible. What's a few hundred thousand unsubs gonna hurt anyway.

Even without the enormous likelihood that any mail to that list will be spam, there's a significant problem you should consider: UK data privacy laws may not allow that list to be transferred.

  • You have to know for what reasons people signed onto her database.

For example, if she had a site about cars, which people subscribed to then you send them messages regarding marketing, the response is going to be crap.

    And maybe they'll report.

Do you know why the subscribers 'ARE' subscribers to that list?

    Jay.

    Daniel,

Having a list of 8,000,000 people that are not familiar you, and from a variety of businesses isn't very targeted.

Are there any common threads to the businesses ??
    Similar Demographics etc??

Is it possible for the creators of the various lists to first do an introduction of you to their list?

If you don't have a relationship with the members on this list, it may be viewed as just spamming. (I'm not saying you don't have permission to use the names, I am saying the perception may be spam)

If there is a common thread, then use that to introduce yourself and products that are wanted by that group.

      oooh I know...

Email and ask for a friend request on Facebook, and twitter.

That'd be fun to watch you single handedly crash the site.

You have to do something though, but I bet you lose half the list from people wondering why the heck you're emailing them.

I would have to ask myself why anyone would want to get rid of
a subscriber base of 8 million people. Of course maybe she doesn't
want to be bothered by it, or is sincerely tired of email marketing.

We don't know the specifics about anything, really, and I'm not
    asking about it.

But you said she built it up through her purchase of many companies.
So it would seem they're on her list for many different reasons. I would
hope she at least had them organized for you. If not? Wow.

I don't know... 8 million people. The way you described it, it just raises
a lot of flags in my mind and lots of questions.

Seems a responsive list of 8 million people would be worth a helluva lot
per annum. Must have been some website.

Noone just 'gives away' a list that large unless there is little to no value in it.

8,000,000 is ALOT of people....but, I'd rather 1,000 very highly targeted people rather that 8,000,000 people who have no connection to you whatsoever....at the first receipt of an email, like some have stated, many of these people will immediately wonder "Why" they are receiving an email from you....

out of curiosity, what website did you sell to her? ....and, did you receive actual cash, on top of this list...or just the "list"?

So it's a list of subscribers that you didn't build, have no relationship with in any fashion except their address resides in a table, and you want to know how to send an unsolicited message to them for profit (because they didn't actually sign up to be on YOUR list)?

Hell you might as well sell it to some Russians.

Spam. Really this isn't even much of a decision. You'll get whacked around mercilessly if attempt to send 8 million people an email. If you try it, small chunks, extremely humble approach. Explain your reasons in explicit terms. And then put on your thickest skin because there will be repercussions. Unless you know someone very gifted in hiding tracks and willing to put his network at risk (and those above him) to blast 'em all out to "clean" it up. But I repeat: it's spam.

Well, I've been the same situation. One of my client said that he has over 1 million emails that he has gathers over the years.

When I dig deeper with questions, I realized that he has just been collecting over the YEARS, not even communicating with them. So I deem the list as useless.

Another client of my said that he has about 200,000 names in the list...

When I dig deeper, he told me that he has bought it at $0.02 per name. Another useless list.

My suggestion is to dig deeper, find out more about the list, how often was it communicated, what are the topics, etc. before you swap any deals.

    You got your bases covered.

Either you spam the forum, or you spam a list of 8,000,000 people.

Of course, your intention is not to do either of those things, but it's how the message is interpreted that counts.

    All the best,
    Michael

p.s Will our profits be EXPLODED by getting hooked into a list of 8,000,000 people?

If this woman has a great relationship with the 8 million subscribers, you could make a deal with her to help you build a similar relationship with them. After all, if she had a strong relationship with them, she could introduce you, and even continue communicating with them for a time (jointly with you, of course), until you also have a relationship with the people on the list. Then it could have some real value.

I think your first step is determining how targeted this list is, and how these emails were obtained. 8 million is most definitely a very intimidating number, and the best way to go about handling this list is to determine if it's targeted in terms of a niche and the type of demographic(s) it has. This would be your first step in determining whether to treat that list as a single entity, or break it down into categories so that you can target individual people on that list better.

Once you have done that, I'd start trying to establish a relationship with the list as quickly as you can. Try to ask for feedback to see how responsive this list is, and just continue supplying them with valuable content for a while to build trust. After, and ONLY after you feel like you have established a reasonable rapport with them do you start sending them promotional emails. I'd take this cautious approach as the list may be old with a fairly low open rate (given this huge number), and it'd be best to warm the subscribers up first before attempting any kind of promotion.

To be honest a list highly responsive of about 50 people absolutely core niche targetted is way better than an unorganized list of 50000 people. So my first advice would to be break up your subscribers in different niches if possible. Email them, check for their current active ratios, then use this small list to promote offers.

Have a good luck though. It is like you have a mine and you need to find the gold... Pretty easy if you take some action
