Would you - Stay studying, or travel the world?

Hey all,

I'm having a major dilemma, I don't really enjoy university that much anyway, maybe I have signed up for the wrong studies. I'm thinking about changing my studies to Web Design and Development, since I'm already interested in internet marketing, and learning how to make great websites, programming etc. can certainly help, plus - in a way, it is still "secure" since 99% companies need a website, someone to maintain it and work in that whole "interactive media" whatever department.

The second option is that I just quit my studies, and go traveling the world. You can do internet marketing from anywhere where you have an internet connection, and I already make enough to live nice and travel around Asia, South America, Africa, and a bunch of other places, actually, the whole world. Yeah, it's scary, most people tell me I should "finish the study and then travel" or that "it's too RISKY", and everyone seeks security in this so non-secure world (said in a sarcastic tone ), I mean, yeah, some places are not that safe, but so what. That's the fun about it. The adventure.

So, what would you do -

1. keep on studying
2. change studies to something that may suit me more
3 or just pack my stuff and hit the road, travel for a couple of years and then maybe later go to college just because of the diploma/social status/security bs.

I'd appreciate some ideas from more experienced, worldly wise warriors ,
thanks,
Jack

I'd choose option 3 and I envy you (in a nice way) because you are able to make that choice.

    Go for it.

The famous Steve Allen said something years ago that I've never forgotten. He said "Travel is the best education on can get." In talking with my kids who have traveled the world, they agree.

Gosh, a lot of what you have said really resonates with me. I'd spent a couple of years in the UK, working as a graphic designer till they kicked me out (visa expired). I wanted to go back so bad I went to get a degree, so I could become a teacher and they would have me back. In that year I did a few papers on computer stuff, html etc, and in my first year discovered IM. I thought that would be a much better way to travel, so after my first year, I quit, and that's what I did.

We just came home because we got pregnant, but for the next year I set everything up while I worked part time. For the next three years we house sat our way around Canada and Australia (flying from one side of the country to the other), came home for a while, went back to Australia, all on money from IM.

What I would never have done however is embark on these travels without having a solid income first. My advice is, get something up, running, working and making you money before you pack anything in and go anywhere.

Change your papers and take some that will help you. Study for another year, meet some new friends, maybe someone special, work hard and do it next year. It will be worth it.

    Have fun!

I have been traveling France and Spain last year or so and I wish I knew half of what I know now from these last two months on these forums...it was an unmitigated disaster but if you have a little passive income coming from IM I would certainly do it, all my energy right now is to get some pennies so I can get farther next time lol

I think you should finish what you started. My opinion - change your studies, finish the degree, and then travel. I don't say this because it's 'too risky', I say this only because you already started school. Change to something you like and enjoy, finish the degree, and take advantage of your time in school. While doing this you can start to work on more income in IM. Then you can travel when you finish school, and you hopefully have even more money to travel with. Good luck

    Hi,

My advice is to think about your long term plan - how long you want to be away for and how you will support yourself. If you find you need money while overseas most likely you will not be able to work unless you have an employer sponsoring you and qualifications to justify why they want to hire a foreigner.

For me I didn't know what I wanted to study until I was travelling (had already dropped out of one course) so it was the right decision for me, however between my husband and I one of us has always been working no matter what country we were in but as a result I have spent pretty much spent my entire adult life studying part time to get the qualifications I need in my choosen field.

There is no right or wrong answer it has to be a personal decision but think about the long term. Also depending on your finances you might be able to spend 3 months travelling to see what you think before doing anything permanent.

Why not have a gap year and travel then.

Once you make a decision do it 100%.

So long as you aren't being lazy and aren't just a cop out, then you should be ok.

    Just never regret yesterday.

If you feel sure that you have signed up for the wrong studies I doubt that you will finish them anyway.

I would take off and travel, see and experience as much as you can. There is another option and that is long distance learning. As long as you have an internet connection you can study and get a degree or diploma in many subjects. Perhaps even long distance learning to start with and finish your studies at college.

Anyone who has read my replies to similar "should I stay in school" threads will be expecting me to tell you to stay in school.

First off, you say "I don't really enjoy university that much anyway", but you don't say how far into your chosen program you are. If you're still in the early stages, this is common. Most courses of study have required courses and basic foundation courses that often are not that interesting. Those are the ones you gut through if your actual chosen field interests you.

So the first thing is to sort out how you feel about your field in general, and is your current discontent coming from actual dislike or boredom with required classes.

The next thing to think about is whether you'll find yourself in the same position a short time into a new field of study.

Only you can decide if the "chuck it all and roam the world" option is right for you.

If you do decide to follow the wild goose, don't burn any bridges. After a few months or even a couple of years, you may decide to pick up your studies again.

My final piece of advice would be to have a backup plan. What could you do if something happened to your online income? What if you were stuck someplace with no Internet connection or no way to access that money? Have a backup skill that doesn't depend on the Internet.

For example, a friend of mine decided to sail around the world. He had money from some wise investments, but he also knew he could find himself needing cash quickly. So part of his preparations involved learning a couple of skills he could use anywhere. He chose tailoring and small engine repair. For the places he planned to go, he knew that he could always fall back on making/repairing clothes and fixing boat engines. I don't know how much tailoring he did, but he never had trouble finding demand for someone who could make dead engines live again.

As Big Mike said, the time to travel is while you are young and without responsibilities.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you...

My kid did a Semester At Sea, went around the world, and got CREDIT too...these type of programs offer the best of both worlds and may open your eyes to other possibilities. Also, she was an exchange student in Brazil for almost a year (after graduating high school) and that afforded a chance to travel and experience other lands and peoples.

Check into programs your university offers for travel and credit. Good luck.

Most people over 30 usually advise to stay in school
because that's how they were programmed by
society so they think it's still relevant advice to this day.

If you just open your eyes and realize it's 2010 and knowledge
is everywhere including ordering anybook you could ever need
online, and you can make money from the computer.

I'm 22 and Traveled all last year. I took a total of 8 airplane rides!

All my income was from my laptop. You'll never starve you will
always find a way to be supported. Even sometimes in unexpected
    ways.

Most people are programmed into thinking things are "Risky", but
they come from an era where their subconscious mind was programmed
by others and didn't have much access to information as we do today.

GOING TO COLLEGE DOES NOT GIVE SECURITY!!! THIS IS NO LONGER
RELEVANT SO PLEASE STOP GIVING KIDS THIS GARBAGE.

I recently got on facebook and started connecting with a lot of people
I went to high school with. Most of them went to college and graduated
and are financially struggling more than you can imagine.

I on the other hand make more money than most people in America just
from my laptop. And I never went to school.

Anyone notice there is a financial crisis? Good paying jobs are
few and far between. Learn to generate income on your own.

Don't let other programmed people program your midn into thinking
college is the "Safe" thing to do.

      Daniel

Daniel you make a lot of good points.

But please don't assume that most older people here have been "programmed by society".

Also, never undervalue an older person's life experience, even if you think it it could be worthless and out of touch.

There is more to life than getting a degree, but also, there is more to university than just getting a degree as well.

Don't forget that most people in IM don't make enough money to feed a goldfish, let alone travel the world.

So it mainly boils down to mindset, goals, and confidence in one's own ability to make things go well, despite all that the world throws at you.

      • Hello, well Sam that was an interesting post and I would have to say that I agree. I am 33 and I have thought like that for many years. My family was always telling me to go and focus on education.
However for those that want to do something else, going and spending $90,000 on an education or an MBA is the best plan. You have to apply to get a job and f there is an employment glut then...? You will have to pay off those big loans. If you get the job then you are stuck having to dance to their rhythm to keep your head above water.
Develop your own skills that can assist the world and create value for the people. You will be able to make it on your own.

Just because a person is 50 years old doesn't mean they have wisdom - if they were a fool 20 years ago, they still are today.

Most people get their information through the TV, or through their family/friends, who aren't even successful themselves. (The Blind leading the Blind)

You have got to cut off the Underachievers, and only associate with Successful people, who will encourage you to step your game up. Once you change your social circle, you will be coming up with creative ideas all the time, and the idea of college and formal education will seem like just a joke.

Most people go to work 8 hours, come home watch TV fall asleep and do it all over again. Being an entrepreneur requires you to have greater discipline and tenacity, if you gotta stay up 3 days straight to get something done, then thats what you gotta do.

It's become too easy for Americans to have Food on their plate, a roof over their head, without enduring any real struggles. In a place like South America, you have to be very skilled and knowledgable to attain even a middle class lifestyle, otherwise you will be in poverty. That's why when these immigrants come over here, they start dominating cause America is a piece of cake to them. I've seen alot of Dudes who cant even speak English, accomplish in 2 years what takes an American almost 2 decades.

Well ya know you could always do both.

Have you considered online courses in the field that more suits you?
That way you could study and get your degree in something that interests you AND travel.

All while still doin your IM.
And by the by I envy you completely, I would love nothing more than to just go and travel the world with my few electronics to keep me making money and continue my studies online all while living it up.

Anyway just a thought, both may be doable

    Easy.

    Hit the road.

You'll get an entirely new and different kind of education if
you travel the world. Hard to put a price on it. It'll open your
    mind. Expand your mind.

I lived in Europe for two years and visited about a dozen
    countries.

It was hands down the best time of my life, to date. I would not
    trade that time for anything.

You can always go back to school. Do IM, whatever...

Get the hell outta town and see the world.

    Live!

Have fun. Visit the internet cafes around the world and keep
    us posted. K?

I was kinda lucky really. When I studied in college back in '99, I was doing IM related courses without knowing it. Graphic/Web Design, Advertising/Marketing and Writing...all very beneficial to a person doing IM. Well...it was either that or Animation. I probably would've gone into animation if that one phone call hadn't arrived a day late but that's another story.
Anyway, I say if you're bored with your studies then change over to something you think you'll need.
Oh yeah, do some traveling if you can. You already have money anyway.

    You're asking the wrong question.

No matter which one you choose, you will never do the other two. You either finish what you started, switch to something better, or take off and travel.

So imagine NEVER doing each of those things. Which one makes you feel worst for not doing it?

    That's the one to do.

Travel, Travel, Travel! I preach that to my kids like a broken record. My husband and I have made it a priority to take our kids and show them different states and lifestyles. Reading about cultures and other people's
way of life is great, but being their and living the experience...priceless.

There are just some things that you can not get from a book. The food you eat, the people you meet, the places you visit, adapting to different cultures and there way of life will help shape who you become as a person.

The one thing I've learn from traveling to different countries, is their lifestyle is simple and very basic. We are spoiled by a lot of luxuries and material things that don't neccessarily make us happy, but cause more stress and peer pressure.

The best education you can get is the one from experience.

I also believe that being an entrepreneur is the only way to go because
your in control of your earning potential.

So did I say go travel !

Dude, go see the world while you can. Most people never get the chance to travel that much, and for that you are lucky. Plus, you never know if the current foreign relations will continue to go downhill until you really won't be safe AT ALL in some countries.

You seem as though you've basically made up your mind already, you're just looking for some more opinions to firm up your thoughts.

If you have the means of traveling, as you say you do, then go see the world. Come back for that degree later. It's not like the colleges are going anywhere.

If you are sure of your ability to have enough to live on or a way to earn money abroad, do it. I have traveled all over the world. The education you will receive is priceless. Most places you will be fine as long as you keep your eyes open and don't cause trouble. However, being broke in a country where you do not know their culture can be a bad experience.

You obviously don't know what you want to do when you "grow up." Best to stop and evaluate your real passion and then go for it. Traveling can help you find this passion. Most of us wish we had done that when in our early 20's before we had a family that took precedence.

Have fun, be smart, concentrate on finding your passion, don't get sidetracked by jerks. They are in other countries as well as in the USA.

I assume you have no family responsibilities, so this is the right time to go experience the world!
