Duplicate Content and eHow Articles

Hi,
I have a substantial cache of eHow articles--all written by me--and I want to want to double dip by republishing them on my own domain. On my own domain I will have control over the ads and really be able integrate affiliate links in a way that I cannot do through eHow.

My question is whether my new site will be heavily penalized for hosting duplicate content, since I would like to keep them on eHow as well and maintain my passive income stream there. So far as I know, eHow is the only place where these articles are published, and I have not caught any scrapers or plagiarizers so far.

Or should I just remove them from eHow before I put them on my own site so that I don't risk any penalty?

Is there a viable middle ground solution? I would really prefer to monetize this content on my own domain, yet I don't want to completely forfeit my eHow income which is decent. Thanks for any suggestions...

    dokli,

I removed 150+ of my articles from eHow, and moved them to another site.

Their recent actions are absolutely disturbing. I can't write for a website/company with ethically questionable conduct. That's just my personal decision. Many writers there removed their articles, as well.....they DO command a very significant search engine authority...however, they really rubbed alot of writers the wrong way recently.

OK...But my question is more about duplicate content penalties. I'm rather loathe to remove them from eHow as my monthly income is quite good there. I want put them on my own domian too and still get nice SERP results and income.

I believe I've seen you on other forums advocating for Infobarrel, but I'm talking about possibly moving my content to my own website, not another third party. Thanks

Duplicate Content is a Myth! There is no google penalty and this has been proven to be fact.

    * You can post your articles without changing them to 100,000 places if you wish.. This is called syndication.

    * You can use the same content on your domain name, this is known as working smart.. I do in fact have duplicate content on my domain and my authors benefit from this big time.

    * No google does NOT pick the article they think should be on top, you can dominate google's entire front page with the same exact article. Many of us do just that ...

What google does not want you to do is create the same exact pages with the same exact content over and over on your same domain. Many did this years ago and they was called doorway pages, the idea was to increase your rankings. It worked until the search engines got smarter. This is what google frowns upon.

I'm often tempted to think it's myth because of the sheer number of identical recipes and song lyrics pages that share the front page of Google. I only wonder if my site might get sandboxed if I fill it up with duplicate content right out of the gate.

Someone suggested that I get it estabished with some new original content, and then add the eHow articles.

      Thanks

It does not matter, its syndication and no google will not do anything.. I have 150+ new sites all with syndicated articles and the sites are growing just fine with no punishment from google...

You have a great idea for an eHow article topic and can hardly wait to write it and post it online. Before starting, check that your idea is unique on eHow.

Start with the obvious. Put your topic into the Search eHow.com box at the top of the website. Take a look at any articles that sound similar to what you plan to write. If your article brings new information or a new angle to the topic, do not worry about existing articles.Since newer articles may not show in an eHow site search, try a Google search with your proposed article title. Quickly check out what you find that is different from what you found with your eHow site search. The third step to avoid duplicating topics is to start a draft of the article. Put in the title. Then in the expanded view, go to the bottom. Click on SEARCH FOR RELATED ARTICLES in section 3 of the form. Try a few variations on your keywords to see what articles you can find.In another window, look over these articles and make your decision about writing or not writing on the topic. If you decide to abandon the topic, return to the very bottom of the form and click on DELETE DRAFT.

            dude, what?

This discussion is not about writing eHow articles. If you wish to contribute to a serious discussion, it pays to read the original post and its replies.

          Hi James,

I know you have gone into this whole issue in another popular thread but let me ask a quick question:

If I wanted to take articles others have written (say EZA for example) and after giving them credit through leaving their resource box intact then I could just post this on my low PR site and over time I would possibly rank for these keywords along side the EZA article for example?

If this is the case then why do more people not do this?

I think if you choose the right content (keep in mind usefulness/helpfulness/entertainment/interest of your target market) covering the right keywords with the right keyword density while building backlinks for those pages via article marketing, forum marketing, Web 2.0 marketing, blog marketing, etc., then = yes.

I believe because most of your site's traffic will do what the resource box of those syndicated articles tell them to do, which is to click their links, read the content on those linked pages, buy from them or sign up with their mailing lists or subscriptions, etc. etc. etc.

And, I think the number of outbound and inbound links (all links including ads) on a page affects its PR, SE ranking for target keywords, and traffic conversions (more links = more distractions for page viewers).

I think it's best to post your own published EZA or EHow articles on your site (you can modify the bio/resource box so viewers can directly do what you want them to do on your site --- the EZA/EHow bio/resource box of your EZA/EHow articles tell them to click those links and go to your linked pages, so since they're now on your pages, your call-to-action box should be direct)...

...instead of helping other author's funnel more traffic from your sites to theirs via syndicated articles on your pages with bio links pointing to their sites.

There are many that do syndicate articles .. Thousands upon thousands of blog syndicate articles and leave the resource box intact.

As far as ranking along side EZA, all you have to do is put your articles on your own site and build backlinks and it can outrank EZA... Authority is not what keeps top listings, backlinks are..

Wouldn't the same thing go for Amazon? If this is the case then you can take product reviews and product description straight from the Amazon site and use it as is ... in your own on site article. With a simple intro and conclusion ... wa la.

I dont see any issue in retaining your content in eHow when you have them published in your site too as long as you own the full rights on them.

Google of course has got an algorithm in loosing rank but you will be safe. And I also strongly believe there are no such thing called a duplicate content penalty.
