I can only get the hyphenated name for a niche I want to be in -- IE: The-Best-Site.com. However, the site... TheBestSite.com is owned by someone and just parked.

Is it dangerous for me to invest my time building the site with hyphens?
If the other site went live would it hurt my traffic?
Would the other site automatically get my backlinks?

I need to know what you guys would do.

    1) No it is not dangerous. It is perfectly fine.
    2) No it wouldn't hurt your traffic anymore than any other competitor taking some of it.
    3) No they wouldn't automatically get your backlinks.

I have plenty of sites with dashes in the domain and plenty of them without dashes. I've never noticed much of a difference.

      Just get on with it.

99% of these parked domains will just stay "parked"

By the time you have built a site and a pile of backlinks to it they will come running to you offering you the domain for a tiny fee. $97 was what I was asked for for one domain where I have the domain with a hyphen.

Parking domains is what sad people do because they can't build a business that makes them money. (Boy I'm in a bad mood tonight)

First, they would not automatically get your backlinks. But they may piggy back off your success. BUT guess what....you will get a business pumping bucks and someone who wants a quick buck will come in and pimp your domain anyhow.

In my humble opinion, concentrate on branding you and your business and don't worry about possibles.

Did you try to buy that domain from the owner? Just a thought..
Or, can ya come up with a different domain?

Add on to the answer. I just looked at the domain you wanted. Forget buying it from them. Honest the domain name isnt that great that its worth the $125,000.00 they want for it. Take your hyphens and build your business.

Personally I would not use one. If you are looking to use that particular name and .com is taken. I would maybe consider .ws or .net, Same name different domain. Also if you use .ws it is out of the ordinary so it could be remembered better.

The only thing about using hyphens is that when you spread your name via word-of-mouth, you have to remind the other person not to forget the hyphens. Not a big deal though. I truly wouldn't worry about it.

    To your success,

I usually avoid hyphens as I found it more difficult to rank well in search engines, and makes it more difficult to verbally tell someone to go to the website. I have better results when I add to the keyword. Example: I would choose TheBestSiteOnTheNet.com over The-Best-Site.com.
