new to niche keyword sites... .com or .info?

Do .com websites inherently perform any better than .info?

It seems that many internet marketers buy.info websites because godaddy.com is selling them for only 99 cents for the first year. Makes startup costs very small and if each site only makes $2 then you've already doubled your investment with very little risk and the potential for big reward? If niche keyword sites prove successful, could easily make 1000 sites, then dump the ones that don't perform and repeat the process with new sites next year?

What is the best advice for someone new to this?

.com sites are percieved to be better from the customers point of view, but if you've optimised the site correctly, it shouldn't matter. GoDaddy sometimes offers their .com sites for $0.99. There should be a thread for this on WF.

Yes get a .com domain if you can. All of the other domain extensions are not as good. (as far as customer perception). It is worth it in the end to pay a little more for the premium domain extension. And you can always get a deal on .com's. Just look out for them. You will probably see some sort of super bowl ad this weekend.

Everyone always thinks .com even if you tell someone hey my website is blahblahblah.info they put in .com .net isn't as good either.

So many .com domains are being sold their running out. I think it was the middle of this year when they finally run out of .com ... time to make more!

A lot of people believe .com's are easier to rank; and there is a theory that Google penalises .infos. This may be true, but remember it is just a penalty - it can be outweighed by good backlinks, relevant content, and all the rest of the on-site SEO best practices.

I always buy .com names because there is a significant perception advantage. In the long run that is worth the difficulty of finding the right name and any slightly higher price.
