Does Having A Static Wordpress Page On Your .com Damage SEO?

I'm hoping some people who knows more about SEO than I do could clear this one up...

If I have a Wordpress blog installed on the root of the domain, and I have a page from within that installation set as a static home page, would the search engines see the text on the static page, or would it see the true homepage that's now invisible to people?

In other words, is it okay to try to get mysite.com ranking even though the page is technically at mysite.com/pagename?

I had a static HTML page which I changed several weeks ago to a static Wordpress page.

My text and video actually now comes from my about page which is displaying as text on the home page.

My ranking slightly improved, so this doesn't appear to be a problem.

I changed to this strange knot about a month ago and all is well.

    Regards,
    Colin

    Consider the standard web site.

The home page is static and they rank very well.

It's not so much the state of the home page as it is the entire site.

Bigger is better and regular updates (i.e) new posts and pages will boost your rankings.

    Thanks for the reassurance, everyone!

I wasn't worried that a static page isn't favoured by the search engines. I was just a bit worried that by forcing another page onto the home page it might do something funky to the html and confuse Google!

Nope...you'll be fine! As LCombs above said....just add more pages so that it's a complete site. You'll also want to ensure the crawlers can find all pages, so include a sitemap link on each page and at least a link back to home.

It depends on what other pages/sites in your niche are doing.

If all the top sites are changing their index page on a regular basis, you should do the same because that's what Google expects from a site in that niche.
