BtoB Marketing - How would SMM be used?

I had a guy ask me a good question today, how can SMM - Social Media Marketing help a company that only does BtoB (Business to Business) transactions?

He's interested in going Web 2.0 (SMM) but wants to know how it should be used to benefit a BtoB marketing strategy.

Any thoughts?

For the long answer to your question go take a look at Social Media B2B: Exploring The Impact Of Social Media On B2B Companies , a blog where that's all they talk about.
Another community that is more oriented towards your question than the Warrior Forum is MarketingProfs.

For a short answer, you can use social media to

-monitor what people are saying about your brand
-provide an additional customer service channel for people who are online
-as a basis for a content marketing strategy where you are delivering content where people already are
-as an additional channel for referrals
      and more besides

Professionals and small businesses look for information online.
Professionals and small businesses like having products referred to them.
In many ways there is little difference, although having something "go viral" is far far less likely.
