How do banned members still participate

How do banned members still get to submit posts and PMs? What's the point of being banned if you can still participate?

Do you have anyone in particular in mind?
I was under the impression that when someone is banned, they're either:

    a) banned temporarily

and can't participate during their "time out"

    or,

    b) banned permanently

    and can't participate ever.

If someone is banned and is able to post/PM, perhaps it's a glitch, logging a help-desk ticket (see top bar) should help resolve the matter quickly.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

Are you sure they're really banned? If you're just going by the title listed under their name, they may not really be banned. Sometimes, people put "banned" there as a joke.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    Hi Lynne,

My hunch is that a member that is 'banned' has certain privileges revoked for some specified period of time. It might be the privilege of starting a new thread, or posting a WSO, etc or something similar.

Sometimes bans are just for short periods of time, to serve as a warning.

Perhaps the confusion comes from the limited vocabulary inherent to forum software - we may think of the term as an all or nothing thing, but having an all or nothing provision doesn't necessarily best serve the community, when there is a wide spectrum of behaviors, of varying levels of inappropriateness, that sometimes need to be addressed on a forum.

It's to Allen's and our amazing moderators' credit that situations are dealt with in a more granular, rather than an absolute, all or nothing, fashion. But to a certain degree, I believe they're limited by the terminology of the forum software itself.

    Hope this helps,

    Kat
