Have you ever had this happen? (Table of Contents/ Conversion from Word to .PDF)

I have had the same issue and have had to go back and constantly try to realign everything lol. I have the same question about this as you do!

I noticed that in pdf files (ebooks) downloaded from different people...

In most of the cases it was an issue with too big fonts used in the TOC - so the chapter title + the space (or dots) between the title and page number + page number could not fit in one single line.

Is this what you are talking about?

hm...interesting....hadn't considered that the FONT may just be to big....i'll have to try making it smaller and see if that works.....

I have it at a 12 Font/Arial....and, it just looks horrendously unprofessional no matter how much I try to align everything...

....oh, and, I've been using PERIODS to divide the chapter title and the page number...

Me too! same issue! it sucks lol! I would sure like to know of some kind of solution to fix this issue. It takes up too much time to try and get that kind of thing right.

Are you putting them manually (the periods) or you let the system do it?

Well, it's strange, Dave...let me try to explain better.....

Each chapter (the wording in the Table of Contents), by nature, has varied wording....

So one chapter may be:

C) Marketing for Kids (just made that up)..........................27
D) Marketing for Grown-ups............................................52
E) Marketing for Fire Fighters.......................................... 58

(lol....so, you'd need different amounts of periods to fill in the gap between the actual chapter title, and the actual page number...)

....Word doesn't seem to make this very easy to do at all....and, it just looks weird when converted to .PDF....because nothing is aligned the way it should be....

If you like, you can send me your table of contents and I will take a look and see if I can work it out. I converted documents from Word to PDF without an issue.
Have you used the tab key to make spacing?

I have to run out right now....but, I really appreciate this Hanz....

Let me let the thread run a bit longer, and, see if anyone else has a solution...

If not, I'd love for you to take a look at it....

.....unfortunately, the course is 5 books (5 different table of contents) spanning almost 400 pages.....

So, maybe I could just send one book later, and have you look at it, if no more responses here?

I think the problem is the manual inserting of the periods. It's not reading correctly when converted to PDF. The best way around this is to eliminate the periods altogether and just use the 'Tab' key for spacing. It will leave blank spacing but at least it won't mess up the alignment of the page numbers.

Insert > Reference... > Index and Tables
Table of content TAB:
to check: Show Page numbers + Right align page numbers
and below select from the Tab leader... drop-down periods, dashes or none or...

You shouldn't be doing it manually. In the document, change the headings of the sections using the Heading style tool, subsections Heading 2, subsection under that Heading 3, then insert a Table of Contents based on the Headings. It adds the periods automatically, etc. It's much easier to update and will save you hours of frustration.

To be honest, it didn't even cross my mind that smoeone would try to make a TOC without using headings
