Wordpress Question, Free Report - Best Practices

Not sure why I can't decide for myself which is the best way to go on this but I want to see the way the majority of you are doing it. I am finally concentrating on building my lists as you all say the "money is in the list" and I am taking my best performers and getting the opt ins.

I use Wordpress as my platform....so my question is when I am giving away a free report to collect names....where is the best place to put the PDF ....create another page and make it private.....I see I can also put it in my media and have a downloadable link to it or do the FTP thing like I would on a normal website...I want to do it the most professional way.

Thanks in advance...lots of names waiting for the reports...and I do understand that they should get something right away so they don't forget who the heck I am.

I think this is not really a WP question

You set up the usual thank-you and confirmation page OUTSIDE of WP (at least that's what I do!) and put only the optin form on my blog, usually in the sidebar.

And I put the download page only on the confirmation page. ON the "thank-you" page I give instructions to go to their inbox and click on the link.

Also, it is a good idea to have some script to protect your download link on the dl page.
