Default Gary Vaynerchuk's Fan Page Tip

Hi,

I have a quick question about one of Gary's recent videos.

On Feb. 7 he posted a video about how companies can use Facebook fan pages.

In the video he talked about Superbowl TV ads, and he suggested that Dennys could send viewers of their TV promo to their fan page, enter their data in a customer tab to access a coupon, and that Dennys could then leverage all of the fan data down the road, once they have it.

I'm curious, how could Dennys leverage this data?

How can offline marketers use this technique to benefit local businesses?

You've already answered your own question - they're getting them to give them their facebook contact details - so at any time in the future Dennys can now also use Facebook to reach customers to let them know of offers and provide coupons to pull in customers which otherwise they would have had to wait for them to come into the store to make a sale.

It lets them pull in customers is the main point - these facebook users may not have been on any database for Dennys until that point.

The same goes for any business - it's an extra communication channel that reaches customers in ways that email and website advertising can't.

We just started a similar offer on our fan page, with a custom tab being shown for non-members of our fan page, displaying a video and email optin. In the video, I am asking them to become a fan, and optin in the form below if they want the special reports on marketing we send out 2-3 times a month based on what we are using with our clients.

We are also using the Facebook PPC ads to drive additional traffic to the fan page.

Once they are a fan, we can broadcast all fan members, and there isn't a restriction like there is with friends on facebook.

That's why I went with a group. Which Gary V is a member. Because my new site to be launched Sosu.com will be a group involved website. I do not seem to have a lot of involvement, so most people seem to treat fan pages and groups the same. Kind of a hand raised I'm here situation. Even on other peoples fan pages and groups there does not seem to be a lot of involvement. Once again people just join. So I think it is important to have the fan page, but do not expect a lot from it except a central point of connection.

I think a lot of people are creating fan pages but not engaging their audiences after they join. They are also probably only posting through the fan page itself, and not collecting emails or having them subscribe to SMS event updates, etc.

SMS subscription can be done through Textmarks.com, and gives you another means of communicating with your fans. You need to have multi-modal communication with them. It's not about just building a fan base, but actually engaging them how they want to be engaged.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing with me some of your thoughts. It's nice to get this insight into the use of the fan page.

And everyone helped me learn about Facebook PPC ads, SMS services, etc.

Thanks!

Facebook is very valuable for social proof too. Say for example, you are working with a restaurant. When people visit the business's website and see they have over X fans on facebook, it shows them that the restaurant is popular. If you get people talking, it can create a buzz that really can't be captured on a static website.

Hi Matt,

Thanks. That's a pretty good point.

I can see how that would generate lots of interest.
