Awesome Traffic But Not Converting?

I have a new site with lots of traffic but low conversions. Here are some thing I'm thinking I need to tweak and test and think about. Any others you can add to the list?

- is the traffic targeted to what you have to offer?
- is your offer amazing enough?
- easy to understand landing page?
- test: video on page, photos on page, audio on page
- what do the visitors want from the site that i'm not offering
- test: text on buttons (ie "Add to Cart" vs. "Grab Yours Now")
- colors of page
- design of page
- copy on the landing page

Anything I missed that you think should be tested and looked at when you are getting lots of traffic but low conversions?

I'm hoping to get some new ideas but also give some ideas above to those who are facing the same issues.

How about looking at how easy it is for someone to purchase. Like can a guest purchase or do you need to create an account? If you do, are there any redundant fields like Company name etc, that will put people off filling in?

    Jenn,

Have you considered whether your visitors are even actually looking for take an action? You need to appreciate that some keywords are far more likely to lead to an "action" (purchase, subscription, ad click etc.) than others.

Hate to say it, but there's a chance you could just be targeting the wrong keyword(s).

Also, different traffic sources convert at different rates. Traffic from a PPC campaign is likely to convert far higher than from social media for a paid product for example.

Lastly, you don't just want a landing page to be easy to understand, but also easy to take the desired action. So try moving around the locations of forms/buttons etc. or having multiple opportunities for visitors to complete the action you are looking for.

Perhaps without giving too much away you tell us what the "action" is you want visitors to take, and how you are promoting the site so far...?

    All the best,
    Richard

It is an important question. Many people here expressed their concern about not getting enough conversions in spite of a good traffic to their site!. It is worth spending time in studying the causes rather than coming to a conclusion early

maybe it is the nature of the beast.. have you thought about that? for free games.. humors.. entertainment sites.. it is easy to get a lot of traffic.. but they are mostly junks.. very difficult to convert.. just keep that in mind when you throwing more money and time at the problem

Is the offer on the landing page a buy or go away offer?

If so, you may want to change it to a free report offer for their email so you can follow up with them to find out what they are truly looking for.

If that doesn't convert, it would most likely be the traffic and keywords are not targeted.

First order of business is to capture their email address.

Give them offer they can't refuse.

Another idea, (and this came Frank Kern. He calls it a "Fly-Catcher" page), is ask them right off the bat, "What is your most pressing question about...?"

There are a couple of survey programs available that give you the code to put on your site.
I think Survey Monkey is one of them.

Thanks all! Just trying to brainstorm some new ideas on things I should be checking for and this was helpful. Yes, of course have a squeeze page to capture email address in exchange for free offer! I'm just not getting as many as I'd like with the keywords I'm using in Adwords (which may be a place I need to look at too!). Although my highest clicked keyword is the exact product I offer...(ex: "Candle Making Video") so I'm looking at what's going on with my page that is not converting visitors into free offer takers!

I really needed to step back now and look at some things to tweak. I've been so focused on traffic and that's going well but now need to focus on making changes on the site to get more conversions.

Good lesson for other newbies too...It's important to test a lot of different things on your website and with your traffic sources. Every website and niche is different so its helpful to have a list like this to remind you to look at a variety of issues that might be affecting your conversions. And of course, a good reminder from all, that just sending people to an offer without first giving them something of value and grabbing their contact info. for follow-up will typically (if not always) have a lower conversion.

Thanks all! I'm getting a new website design so testing that first, then going to make some changes to the copy. I'm taking one thing at a time to change until its where I think it should be. Of course because if you test everything at once, you really can't get a good feel for what actually worked!

            You simply have to test.

I like the idea of sending your traffic to your list. That's the best long-term plan you can have. An an opt-in list is pretty straight forward. Your offer free gift; they offer name and email.

However, if you're getting pretty good traffic, you must be doing something right. If you used articles, perhaps you can manipulate to content to get your readers into the mindset of clicking your link.

If you're using Ezine Articles, rather than putting your bio in the resource box, make the resource box a closing paragraph that reads like an extension of the body. The rhythm of the article will flow easily from the title right into your link.

Targeted keywords, a better understanding of your niche and a way to harvest email addresses will definitely put you back in the game..atleast your getting consistent traffic, is that thru PPCs and blogs?
