$400 Day, Kinda, Sorta - This Ever Happen To You?

Well I sorta had a $400 day. I got sales notifications from a company I am an affiliate with. I generally make just a few sales a week with them so I was pretty pumped. This is for a good company that offers a legitimate trial offer of a top quality product.

But then I looked a little closer and realized the sales all came within a 15 minute time frame. And when I looked even closer I was more alarmed. The email addresses were kind of alike (though different) and so were the names. One name for example might be Thom Brun and the next Tom Brown.

Suspicions aroused I called my affiliate manager and reported the iffy sales. Darn! I am not sure what they were trying to do but it will be interesting to find out.

Good thing I didn't spend it.

I had one of those awhile back. Checked my Amazon stats, and found I'd sold two big screen TVs on the same order. This was back before Amazon capped consumer electronics sales at $25 commission. Even at 4%, I was looking at a quick extra ~$400.

Of course, the reality was that the order was fraudulent, so the sale just disappeared. But it was fun while it lasted...

This thing seems to happen a lot so always be careful. I have recently gotten a flood of fishy paypal emails stating that I'd gotten paid for an item I was selling, but logged in and found nothing..there went that excitement

How about this poor guy the students were trying to play a joke on.

They told him that if he made the shot he would win tickets to the NCAA Basketball Finals.
They would then all cheer as if he made it and that would be the prank.
The problem is...he made the shot.

They gave him tickets for dinner instead.

LOL I saw this story too. He actually did receive tickets to the final four. I think the NCAA or some other large organization heard about this story and felt bad for him so they gave him tickets to the game on behalf of the students. Good and funny story though.

      Hi Lee,

Thanks for the warning to us newbies. In future when my sales start to come through, I will make sure that I double check.

It was odd to get so many sales in such a short amount of time which is why I checked the email addresses and names. And when I saw the similarities I thought something was up, so I called my affiliate manager.

Anyway I can't figure out what was going on. Why would someone order a trial product using different credit cards multiple times. What would they gain?
I have asked the affiliate manager so hopefully will find out.

One thing they gain is the knowledge of which credit cards can be used for online purchases, and which get denied. It's very common among credit card thieves. Once they know which cards they can use, they ramp things up and order as much as they can. With physical goods, they tend to order things they can easily sell, and have them delivered to abandoned houses and such. Another common thing is for the thieves to insist on any delivery method except the US Post Office. If they use the mail for committing crimes, it gets the feds involved.
