Dual-Screen Productivity

Hi Guys

I just set up my new dual-display system here. The cost of monitors is so low now that you can have this sort of setup without spending too much money.

Today (in the supermarket!) I bought a 22" Dell widescreen and I'm using it with my current Sony 19". Now that I've tested the concept, I'm going to buy another Dell so the two I'm using are the same.

Within the first minute of using my new dual-display setup I can already see how much less opening and closing of windows I'm going to have to do during my working day, and how much easier it's going to be to work with all my 'stuff'.

It's a bit like when you go from a small computer desk to much bigger one - there's just so much more room to keep all your work neatly in front of you, without it all getting tangled up.

One weird thing is getting used to your mouse pointer not banging off the right side of the screen when you're whizzing over to the scroll bar or close button - the pointer zooms of the edge and appears on the other screen.

I can highly recommend this way of working to people who have been thinking about doing it.

Timely post for me. I want two or three screens next. Was it hard to set up? Do you need anything special to make it work (special computer cards like video cards etc.)?
I should already know all of this, but I don't worry about something until I am thinking of getting it.

All you need is another monitor and a cable.

You just connect the port that would go to a projector to the other monitor...BAM...instant increase in productivity.

Right click | Properties on your desktop and click the Settings tab to get it going. (Not sure if that works in Vista, though)

I have a laptop connected to another monitor for dual screen and then another desktop with a single monitor for a third screen.

You're going to increase your productivity by 200%!!!! I can't believe what I can get done now as opposed to being stuck with a single monitor.

You need a video card with atleast two monitor ports, a decent graphics card will supply this, or you could just got for one of these bad boys lol

Glenn - Allen is absolutely right.

One of the reasons it took me so long to set this up was because I didn't have time (AKA couldn't be bothered) to read up how it was done.

But all you do is buy another monitor and plug it into your existing video card. Modern PC's usually have at least two sockets of different types. One is standard SVGA and the other is something else. I don't know what it's called.

Then you just go into the Windows display properties (right click on the desktop) and tell it to extend the desktop onto the second monitor.

Edit: Just realised that Allen had posted this information. Yes, it works in Vista. That's what I'm using.

It really is a 30 second setup.

I can attest to this, I have been using 3 LCD 19" monitors for the last 4 years. 1 monitor just for email, and the other 2 for web browsing, 1 browser window per monitor. Yeah, it is incredibly productive and no going back once you experience this.

You can slide anything off one monitor onto the other.

The taskbar at the bottom is on one screen only. Not sure if you can change that.

It is basically just as if you added 1024 wide pixels onto your desktop. LOL

Here's a screenshot of when you use "Print Screen"

In the shot above, the monitor on the left has a sized Warrior Forum on it and the other monitor is showing my desktop.

You can click and drag anything anywhere you want. If I were to grab a desktop icon in the above picture and drag it to the left, as soon as I got to the far left side of the right monitor it appears on the far right side of the left monitor.

Kinda fun when you're first getting started!

Listen, I am surprised this has not come up in this forum before.

You can go right now to Circuit City or whatever computer store you go to...buy a monitor for a couple hundred dollars and immediately increase your productivity to a level you never thought was possible!

Go do it! It is worth every penny!

I just found out that you can drag the taskbar onto the 2nd monitor. It needs to be unlocked to do it. Cool!

If you want the taskbar to extend across both monitors, you need to download a 3rd party utility to do it.

I've been using two monitors for about four years and have found the added productivity well worth the ~$500 that it cost me initially to by the second 19" monitor and a two head card.

it was one of the best moves that I've made from a productivity standpoint after buying a good office chair.

That said, I'm seriously considering getting rid of the two monitor system. Why, because for $400 I can get a 28" monitor from Costco.com. (You have to be a member of Costco but if you are its one hell of a buy.)

A friend of mine purchased one and its one of the brightest monitor that I've seen. Colors are good and the monitor will do 1080p so there isn't any of that irritating pixel lag if you want to watch a video.

My only decision now is do I keep one of the 19s to keep outlook open all the time. I have articulated arms for both of my 19s so I might keep one of them and place it above the 28" monitor for outlook.

Yeah this is a great idea this is how I had my displays set up at home. It does make it easier to work, for sure. I think my next investment is an LCD projector though.

Here's another screenshot showing you that you can have your main desktop icons in view while also having your email client open, using Dreamweaver, while watching the Warrior Forum and your live webstats program at the same time (Woopra watching my dog forum - Woopra kicks butt).

Imagine the possibilities and the time saving you could accomplish for a $200 monitor investment!!!

And this is just a 1024X768 display! You could go way smaller than that and get a lot more on the screens.

...and sporting events. I hook mine right up to the TV through my DVD player and throw it up on my living room wall. Great for parties too...just make sure to wrap it in waterproof (or beerproof) wrapping!!!

I've been using a dual screen setup for years now. When I ran the computer business, I had the order screen and the customer service screen up at the same time. In some cases it is a necessity, not a luxury.

I have a three monitor set up. Love it to death. Got a macbook, elevated a little. And A windows 22' and 19' widescreen. The 22 inch is actualyl 16:10 instead of 16:9 which is a bigger bonus.

I am now running dual screen. 17 inch laptop to a 19 inch flap panel monitor.

This is awesome. wish I would have know about this sooner! I have not been using this monitor for about a year now.

I have a two-tier desk, so I basically have the monitors stacked. You can set up in the monitors to act this way also. That is what I have done. Here's a screenshot of what my desktop looks like with the two monitors stacked

I seem to have started something here

I'm not sure if you're saying you did this, but you need to (in XP):

1. Right-click on your desktop.

2. Choose Properties.

3. Select the Settings tab.

4. Click the big 2 (for monitor 2).

5. Check the box which says: Extend My Windows Desktop Onto This Monitor.

6. Apply/Save.

There aren't any 44" computer monitors available yet. You'd have to use an LCD TV and the resolution would suck in comparison.

Resizing windows on one big monitor can become a pain.

With two windows you can just hit maximize and it will maximize to the window.

Pretty much old hat to me, been dual-monitor since it was introduced in Windows 98

. Wouldn't do anything less now at home anyway. I've used everything from separate video cards to dual monitor cards and they all worked well.

BTW, there was a similar thread awhile back either here or on the old WF.

Yup, dual screen setup is really going to increase your productivity. I currently own a 24 inch Dell monitors (which you can barely see in my avatar) and the 1920x1200 resolution is really unbeatable.

But I recently started working 10 to 15+ hrs per day on photoshop and website building and it's getting to be quite the hassle to minimize the window back and forth.

I was thinking of getting the Dell 30inch but after reading many articles on the internet Dual screen is the way to go! Furthermore my screen resolution will actually be 3840x2400 if I decide to get another 24inch which is much bigger then the 30inch resolution.

I think Dual Screen / Multiple Monitors are one of best PC configurations to improve productivity in so many ways, especially with flat panel monitors making more space available on the desk.

Just a few tips from my perspective:

Borders: Try get monitors with thin borders so less distance between viewable areas.
Same: I think it's better that the monitors be the same brand and model, but mainly the same size so things line up. However for Web Design handy to have regular and wide screen mix.
TaskBar: Task bar for each monitor makes it easier to use, more like 2+ PCs in one and only having to maintain one configuration.
Software: I like UltraMon but is a paid version (with a 30 Day trial) and a forum for helping with problems not just limited to UtraMon. I think there is a free taskbar product 'MultiMon Taskbar' but haven't used as I didn't think it was flexible enough for me when I was checking them out.

Just for info I have my main PCs configured with 4 Monitors: 3 @ 19" (4:3) and 1 @ 19" WideScreen (which also has TV, AV etc). Last time I looked at the UtlraMon forum there were sample setups with something like 8-16 monitors.

I agree with Thomas, you don't go back.

Also I believe there are solutions that allow you to use another PC's monitor over a network as though it were part of 1 PC (without the need for special video cards?) but I haven't actually tried this.

Yes, I briefly mentioned some of the bigger configurations in an earlier post above with reference to UltraMon which also has some good examples.

I thought yours was a great example of how to use 6, with the other 2 being also able to be used almost as 'single PCs' in their own right.

I agree with the productivity improvement. When I first started with multiple monitors I thought about a lot about the functionality prior to setup, but as things developed there are so many possibilities.

I just nipped out to Tesco and bought another Dell 22" for £179, the same as the first one I bought yesterday.

So now I've got two the same side by side and I feel like Captain Kirk in front of this lot!

I like the fact that the Dells have thin borders so they work well side-by-side.

I've gone from 19" square to 44" widescreen for the grand sum of £305 (exc. VAT) and I couldn't be happier.

Assuming it's unlocked, you can drag the taskbar from one monitor to the other.

If you want it to extend across both, you need to get some 3rd party software - Windows can't do it on its own.

Google it - there's loads of info on it.

That said, I'm seriously considering getting rid of the two monitor system. Why, because for $400 I can get a 28" monitor from Costco.com. (You have to be a member of Costco but if you are its one hell of a buy.) A friend of mine purchased one and its one of the brightest monitor that I've seen. Colors are good and the monitor will do 1080p so there isn't any of that irritating pixel lag if you want to watch a video. My only decision now is do I keep one of the 19s to keep outlook open all the time. I have articulated arms for both of my 19s so I might keep one of them and place it above the 28" monitor for outlook. gary

It does make it easier to work, for sure. I think my next investment is an LCD projector though.

Imagine the possibilities and the time saving you could accomplish for a $200 monitor investment!!! And this is just a 1024X768 display! You could go way smaller than that and get a lot more on the screens. Respectfully, Allen Graves p.s. Got a macbook, elevated a little. And A windows 22' and 19' widescreen. The 22 inch is actualyl 16:10 instead of 16:9 which is a bigger bonus.

This is awesome. wish I would have know about this sooner! I have not been using this monitor for about a year now. I have a two-tier desk, so I basically have the monitors stacked. Right-click on your desktop. 2. Choose Properties. 3. Select the Settings tab. 4. Click the big 2 (for monitor 2). 5. Check the box which says: Extend My Windows Desktop Onto This Monitor. 6. Wouldn't do anything less now at home anyway. I've used everything from separate video cards to dual monitor cards and they all worked well. BTW, there was a similar thread awhile back either here or on the old WF.

I currently own a 24 inch Dell monitors (which you can barely see in my avatar) and the 1920x1200 resolution is really unbeatable. But I recently started working 10 to 15+ hrs per day on photoshop and website building and it's getting to be quite the hassle to minimize the window back and forth. I was thinking of getting the Dell 30inch but after reading many articles on the internet Dual screen is the way to go! Furthermore my screen resolution will actually be 3840x2400 if I decide to get another 24inch which is much bigger then the 30inch resolution. Enjoy your Dual Screens man! Regards, -Alex Kaplo

Just a few tips from my perspective: Borders: Try get monitors with thin borders so less distance between viewable areas. Same: I think it's better that the monitors be the same brand and model, but mainly the same size so things line up. However for Web Design handy to have regular and wide screen mix. TaskBar: Task bar for each monitor makes it easier to use, more like 2+ PCs in one and only having to maintain one configuration. Software: I like UltraMon but is a paid version (with a 30 Day trial) and a forum for helping with problems not just limited to UtraMon. I think there is a free taskbar product 'MultiMon Taskbar' but haven't used as I didn't think it was flexible enough for me when I was checking them out. Just for info I have my main PCs configured with 4 Monitors: 3 @ 19" (4:3) and 1 @ 19" WideScreen (which also has TV, AV etc). Last time I looked at the UtlraMon forum there were sample setups with something like 8-16 monitors. I agree with Thomas, you don't go back. Also I believe there are solutions that allow you to use another PC's monitor over a network as though it were part of 1 PC (without the need for special video cards?) but I haven't actually tried this.
