I Need Your Help - (sorted) Thank you Warriors! You Rock!

Hi Warriors,

I know this is probably not the right section.. but it was one where I'd get more viewers for this.

In short, A very good friend of mine has travelled to India for major surgery(for the second time). He just called me and asked me if there was any way i could send him a video of his previous(messed up) surgery in some way(Its in a DVD which I just collected from his home here). His surgeons feel it would help in figuring out what went wrong then.

DHL will take 3 days, he needs it in 24 hours.

I need to figure out a way to send a 4gb video around the world using an internet connection that has a max 12kb upload speed. (I'm currently in East Africa)

1) How can i compress it. I've got 4 files from the video DVD which amount to 4gb. these are in VOB format.

2) Lets say I manage to get it to under 500mb by compressing, can I host it on my shared hostgator account so he can download it from there?

Thank you for your help

Update: I got it compressed.. and I've started uploading which should be done by morning
Thank you!

Obviously I'm not familiar with the resources available in you area however there must be a library or a business or a hospital or government office with high speed Internet. If there is go there and tell your problem and ask to use their high speed.

I hope you find a way to do this.

Good thinking, George. You might also check with a university if there are any in your area.

Im in Tanzania, I have the best possible internet connection. All ISP's here have an extremely low upload speed. The Download speeds go upto 200+ kb/s

Libraries, Universities here do not have these resources. Its not the way it is in the US and Europe. So there isn't a way to send it from one of those.

I figure my best bet is to compress it to around 200mb or so, its a 45 minute laporoscopic surgery video.

If there is an ISP(Internet Service Provider) office nearby to your place, perhaps you can do direct to them.

Second option: You can go to an embassy(idea:US embassy) as they may have their own internet connection.

    Good Luck

Might be a good idea to change the title of your thread to reflect what you actually need. That way the video compression experts or those who've dealt with a similar issue are more likely to click on your thread.

    cheers,
    Becky

(Sorry, I don't know the answer, but I wish you luck.)

Good idea, Becky. To change the title click "Edit" on your original post, then click the "Advanced" or "Go Advanced" button - I'm not recalling the exact terminology - then you can edit the title. Something like "Video Expert Urgently Needed" or "Video Compression Expert Urgently Needed" would draw the right people into your post.

Idea -- If you can't get on a faster connection, can you break it up and have multiple friends send out the various pieces (part 1, part 2, etc) on their own connections? Those could be compressed too so they're not as large.

Thank you all so much! You guys ROCK!.

I changed the title to reflect what i need.

Its night time here, 11pm so I can't really go to any of those places you suggest till tomorrow morning. I'll start with an ISP first and see if they're willing to help.

In the mean time, I have 9 hours till morning and I figure if I can compress it in some way I might be able to send it before that.

    Hi Davioli,

What you need is a DVD ripper. On my Mac, I use Handbrake. It's available for Windows:

    HandBrake (not an affiliate link)

Handbrake will take the video from the DVD and create an MP4 version that will have a much smaller file size. If the first rip does not make a small enough file, go into the settings for the MP4 conversion and lower the quality and/or the frame rate.

Converting that MP4 to Flash video would probably give you an even smaller file size, but it would be a little more difficult for the viewers to play the Flash video. If you take this route, tell the viewers to use RealPlayer to watch the Flash video file.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

Just started downloading the GUI setup file for handbrake. Will try it out till I get a low file size/acceptable quality.

      Thanks!

This software is okay. But I much prefer FreeStar Free DVD Ripper. It more fast.

couldn't you just use something like VirtualDub to compress it?

I got it compressed using a free VOB to FLV converter. I have 4 files which amount to around 400mb in total.

I've started uploading it to one of my shared hosting accounts on Hostgator. I'd like to know if this might be an issue with them. I will upload 400mb and the same will be downloaded by my friend tomorrow.

While hostgator gives unlimited bandwith do you think they might ban me or something for high usage?

I don't know the answer but perhaps it wouldn't hurt to send them an email explaining the issue.

    Good luck.
