New Product Idea, Will it Work?

Hey all,
Quick intro, ive been lurking here for about 6 months, and thats as long as Ive been trying to do IM. I havent been too successful, but I did make one affiliate sale for $70 commission, so that was cool and gave me enough motivation to continue trying to figure this out.

Anyways! I had an idea for a product, but I can't seem to find hardly any similar products. So I wanted to get your opinion if its a good idea before going into it.

It's a "Video Magazine" or a monthly "TV show" that you have to subscribe to to either gain access to the monthly episode (~50min) or have a DVD of each episode shipped to you. For the DVD I was thinking $10-15/month.

Im not going to give away the niche I want to do this in, but the target market is males 14-30 mostly, but it could appeal to anyone. For example lets say its about amateur (at home) fight clubs. What the "show" would be is 50% popular videos already online (licensed legally from owner), maybe with some extra commentary, and 50% new footage being a combination of fight videos, interviews, commentary etc.

Do you think it will work/ will it sell?

Are you familiar with any similar subscription based monthly DVD show type things?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Sounds like a winner to me. You might also want to add a users' forum to involve your audience and get ideas for future episodes.

If you are basing others videos as part of your scheme, you are going to need to get permission and actual copies of those to host/use yourself.

For instance, just because I have videos in my youtube account does not give you permission to just scrape them and put them in your own product.

You'd need to approach me and get permission, otherwise I could sue the pants off of you.

On the flip side, you gave me the vision of Mystery Science Theater there, with the guy and the aliens watching the horror flicks and commenting on them.

Could be extremely amusing with what ever niche you choose if done properly.

    Good luck.

My only suggestion woudl be to make sure you are giving much more than one video/episode per month. For people to join a membership site, after the first episode they will get bored and probably walk away before the 30 days goes by and they see something else.

You will want to drip content to them in some fashion so they are always engaged in your process and always feel the membership is worth stickign with.

    Just my opinion of course

There have been similar things done before by many. The HARDEST thing is to always come up with new content. The licensing of existing content can be a problem. It should be the same format, relatively compatible, and unencumbered. If it is ALREADY popular, it may be on a site like youtube and could be encumbered by a third party. ALSO, the customer will probably want it to be mostly stuff that ISN'T available for free.

I have seen a NUMBER of them fail JUST because of the lack of consistency. Heck, "Allen Says", who owns this forum, tried this with ebooks and software. And hopefully everyone here realizes I am not faulting him for that. He EVEN tried licensing content, but THEY weren't reliable.

I would have done something similar if I thought I could pull it off.

Thanks for all the great tips!
And yes I would get permission from the owner of the video before using it.

For the "content dripping" do you think like one article or photo gallery per week is good? What kind of content is good for that?

And Ill definitely setup a forum.

    Thanks again!
