Info products or schemes?

One thing I've noticed is a bunch of people often gravitate towards what I call "schemes" to make money online. Schemes might be a harsh word for it, but it sort of stuck with me through the years...

Let me explain...

What I call a scheme might be a method where you earn money through CPA offers and Craig's List. For example, you find people looking for auto financing, then send them a CPA offer on getting auto loans. That's an example of a scheme to me. There are a bazillion more like that in all areas of Internet Land.

I have interacted with lots of customers and people in this IM space, and I see many (especially newbies and intermediate marketers) looking for these "schemes" as a way to make money online.

I guess there's nothing wrong with that at all. I'm no one to judge at all, and I know some advanced marketers who make a fortune with these types of "schemes". And, I've seen plenty of newbies who make "some" money from these schemes too.

When I first started online, everyone was into Adsense. I knew people who made 60k+ per month with Adsense arbitrage. It was hot. Luckily for me, by the time I even looked at Adsense arbitrage way back then, it was dying fast.... and eventually crashed with the Google Slap!

Today, I still see lots of people chasing schemes. And they depend on some loophole, or some "scheme" that depends on other sites (like Craigs list, or CPA networks, or Google, etc) to make their money.

IMO, this causes many-many marketers to fail. The newbies fail because they are actively SEARCHING for these schemes, and more advanced marketers fail because they are dependant on the scheme --- until it crashes.

IMO, I would not bet the house payment on such schemes.

Instead, the folks I've met who make the most amount of $$ longterm, depend on something entirely different than schemes. Those folks who make the most money depend on the fundamentals of direct response marketing.

You see, even if the Interwebs exploded and never existed again, those who focused on mastering the fundamentals of direct response marketing would still be able to earn a solid living offline. through direct mail, or advertising, etc.

I'd bet my house payment on that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'm afraid that most people out there are too focused on schemes (those magic loophole buttons) instead of basics like:

-- copywriting and conversions
-- psychology of sales, human behavior and why people buy (triggers)
-- traffic and lead generation
-- list building and list mgmt
-- branding and positioning
-- product creation.

and more

If you are new to this business, then you are probably like most out there and are looking for a quick way to replace a job, or supplement income, etc... and if you were to follow my advice, you'd spend your quality time sharpening your skills in "direct response marketing" and limit your time chasing "schemes".

It's not that hard to create valuable products and market them.

~Eric
PS - Schemes are cool too (as gravy!)

    Great Post Eric!

It's the never ending quest for the "magic bullet" and the "do it all for me now button". For some reason people coming into IM don't look at it as a business. They don't give it the attention, respect or thought that it deserves...the same attention, respect or thought they would give to starting an offline business.

"mysteries of the mind" as Jim Rohn would say.

Eric, it's good to see other other WF "stud" in here.....lol

You're dead-a$$ right about the fundamentals. Take everything I own, even my computers, and I'd still make it make to where I am today. Though please don't take away my coffee......

Definitely a great post. If you really want to be successful at this, you have to develop a system. Any system that's going to make you a long term living will have the basic priniciples of business that you mentioned within it.

I totally agree on developing your business skills. Do that and you can make it in any market.

Well said Eric, I became a full time marketer this year and was able to quit my job from doing exactly what you say here. I took a coach in August last year, and this was exactly what he got me to focus on. I will be honest and say that like many I was always following the schemes too, I spent on cpa courses etc, then, when I took a coach who understood direct marketing, who kept telling me the only thing to do was build a list and real business, did I finally have the penny drop.

Now I can only agree with you and urge others to follow your advice.

      Great post Eric, thank you.

I've been chasing the magic button ... others would say turnkey system that does everything for me. Not anymore.

Right now I'm focusing building a real business, doing my research and applying what I learn, trying to fail faster and learning even more from those "failures".

Hope many IM people read your post

      All the best

Absolutely, Eric. I frittered so much time on the schemes before being hit on the head metaphorically by a coach who got me to focus on value, the list, and product...

Great post...It's a shame that the solid business plans are buried so deep in all the schemes for people that are new to IM like myself.

The only thing that kept me from falling for more of these schemes was the fact that
I had knowledge of the basics from running an offline business.

I agree with this, I too have found most people want a quick solution instead of building up a real business layer by layer.

I think that "quick solution" mindset is maybe the biggest killer of dreams there is. Well, maybe not, but it's one of them IMO.

I mean, as a marketer, all you have to do is laser focus on building a list... then managing that list. I know, I make it sound simple... but it is!

There are folks here who have spent THOUSANDS of dollars buying products. AND, they have spent YEARS of their time in this business and are still not making $$. That's tons of money and tons of time.

If ALL of that money and time was spent on one thing. Like building a list, it would be game over. case closed. no more questions your honor.

      Anyway... rock on!

Terrific post. I agree that for newbies (like myself) the lure of fast and easy money is attractive. There are lots of big names promoting products that offer instant success. Having fallen for more than my share, I came to finally accept what I always knew, making money on the internet is like any other business; offer good products, treat your customers with respect, give more than they ever would have expected and do the necessary steps to build your business for the long haul.

      Word.

Kevin, you bring up a important discussion, and something I preach all the time myself actually and that is this...

Be a "Seller" not a "buyer".

As a seller, of course you should make your copy sound easy IMO. If you say, "This $hit is hard as hell and you will probably fail because your dumb, lazy, and most likely will never focus on it or even download the damn thing you just bought, but buy it anyway"... nobody will buy.

If you say, "Make money faster than lightning, and it's easy as pie" people will buy.

Not only in this niche, and nobody give me crap about this either, because it's been going on for centuries. Lose weight with this simple patch. Lose weight while you sleep. It's easy with weightwatchers... etc.

We all buy stuff, but is your mindset that of a buyer, or a seller? In this business, the day it switches to "selling", everything changes. You are now one of the bad guys. You are now on the dark side.

BTW, being a seller pays very well.

For a short time, the internet did make instant millionaires, and there were easy formulas or "schemes" that worked great. But we're now getting into a phase where people are smarter, and Internet marketing is becoming more like traditional marketing. The general rules for success still apply, even if they were pushed aside there for a few years.

no worries I just saw an opportunity to be funny, and I always take those opportunities. lol

for real though, schemes can be great waves to ride... and if you're good at surfing them, you can switch from one scheme (wave) to the next, which many savvy marketers do. Heck, some schemes can be invented all by yourself if you play with things.

That's the beauty of the Internet. So many opportunities to be found, and invented. We've barely scratched the surface IMO.

Suffice to say, Internet marketing has definitely reached kind of a saturation point-if you are thinking about advertisng via PPC, forget it-your advertising dollars would be far better spent on Postcard marketing or magazine advertising...and as for buying MLM or opportunity leads, the majority of those are overpriced and overhyped...
