Coverting an article directory to Wordpress.....

I have an article directory (indexpage plus sub folders) and I want to move it to Wordpress for ease of management.

Wondering how to set this up.

Is it better to do this with page hierarchies as categories with subpages/folders
or
just as posts and categories?

Trying yo figure out how to best maintain the category/folder structure and keeping it easy for visitors to navigate.

Cheers

Pete

I think you'd have to configure the permalink to match the old site and you'd also have to find a way to move the data between databases so it works.

You really should get someone to do this for you - best to look on odesk.com, scriptlance.com, or rentacoder.com.

The last thing you want to do is lose your page rankings and existing links...tread carefully.

I reckon once you have it in to have categories and folders - most people with blogs have this and will be easier for your audience.

Categories and posts would, probably, be a better choice: posts go automatically in the RSS feeds (for Pages you need a plugin); url+category-name+post-title is a good URL structure for SEO; new posts are pinging the update services; etc.

Don't go for the Pages just because you saw zillion of themes that have a top navigation based on Pages. You can easily do the same thing with categories and subcategories

The site has fallen into neglect due to my laziness and the fact that its a pain in the ass to update so I don't have to worry about rank and links much.

I was leaning towards the categories and posts because then I could use software to update on autopilot.

The only thing with that is, all of the articles in each category wont be immediately visible for visitors.

      Thanks all

I am not sure I understand this "issue"...
Where aren't they visible? And why? Please, explain.

Tell me exactly what you want and I will tell you whether it's possible in WP or not.

How are they all "immediately visible" in your present setup?

          Hi Istvan,

On the old site I have the main index page with some blurb plus article snippets with links to the various categories.

Each category has its own sub-folder and each page has its own menu down the left side.

So all the article titles are in view and people can easily choose which they'd like to read.

WP solution: custom home.php template or custom Page template for your "frontpage" Page.

            WP solution:
            - each category has its own virtual subfolder (when using nice permalinks) out of the box
            - use Conditional Tags to display different sidebar content on different pages/Pages and some code to display post titles from that category
            - for less coding with conditionals you may try the widget logic plugin + some other plugin to display post titles in that category

You can display (almost) anything wherever you want... e.g. the category archive page (i.e. after clicking on a category name) can be customized to display only (clickable) titles and as many posts as you want; use a plugin like CQS.

Let me repeat here again my WP mantra: if you know exactly what the structure of your content is going to be in WP, most of the experienced WP users/tweakers can tell you how to achieve your goal

              Thanks Istvan,

Gonna have a look into conditional tags, they look interesting and the CQS plugin.

Just in case its useful to someone.

I found a plugin that will display the posts in the current category.

                Posts of Current Category

You can configure a few settings:

                No of posts to show-
                Order by post-
                Sort order by.
