I need an 800 number, suggestions?

Anyone else managing customer support issues with a 800 number or have a suggestion on where to go for the best deal? I really just want to have a more professional set up where people can call and leave voicemail/etc. Any advice?

      Hi Andrew,

What a lot of people don't know about 1-800 numbers is that they can be 'assigned' to certain companies for resale.

So when you are shopping for a number you will be looking for pricing as well as a particular number. One company may have the best price, but the numbers are mediocre, another company may have a slightly different plan, but you can find a good number that you can turn into a word that matches your needs.

Check around on the web as those companies will allow you to look at the numbers they have available and see if you can find one that also allows you to convert it to a meaningful moniker. (1-800-4ANDREW, as an example). Anything with 1-800-4XX-XXXX allows for the '4' to serve as a lead-in.

As a personal preferrence I like 1-800 over 1-877 if you can get it. YMMV.

One other thing you may want to look for is who had that 1-800 number before they gave it up and you end up with it. If you are receiving a lot of calls to the old business it will drive your monthly bill up until that old traffic disappears. Depending on how the old company promoted the number that could take years. It will also drive you nuts :p

      Fwiw, I love having a 1-800 number...

Good pointer, definitely going to Google the number I get. I'm going to grab 2 of them for two of my businesses and just send them to separate Skype numbers possibly, I'm really not sure yet... thanks for the pointers everyone.

There are also several kinds as in local metro only, country only and world wide. On a world wide site, you need to be sure to not get one that is only metro or country specific.

Also if you are only country or metro specific, and set up a Google business directory, they will use the 800 number to verify, but will not add a listing using an 800 number in a business listing to the 7 pac (in my experience) Certainly with out a lot of collaborating information, anyways.

Of all the toll free numbers 800 is still the most expensive and widely used area code prefix.

There are few prefix pointers I want to share if you want to acquire 800 number for business:
    1. 800 - the best/expensive/most scarce
    2. 866 / 877 - least popular/cheap/always mistaken as local numbers
    3. 888 - the best alternative to the 800 prefix/cheaper

Hostgator gives you a toll free number with one of their hosting accounts. I'm not recommending it as I've never used Hostgator, just thought I'd toss it out as an option.

I use Evoice Receptionist but have no idea of whether they are the cheapest compared to the competition. All I know is that it works and in almost 3 years haven't had a single problem.

Most of the folks out here gave quality advice concerning toll free service. As for me the best advice I could give you is once you have this service try using it as your main business number.

I have websites where I use RingCentral: Toll-free numbers, Local numbers, Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Fax services. There's a free trial of the service so you can test drive and compare. Just make sure you cancel the service before the trial ends in case you do not like it so that you do not get charged.
