What's the best option for creating a forum?

I want to add a forum to one of my websites and just want to get some opinions of what is the best way to go about adding one.

I can see SMF and PHPbb options in Fantastico and have had a go at installing both (at separate times).

With SMF I get a message saying the version is outdated and this version contains bugs, it has an 'upgrade automatically' link that doesn't work, just takes me to an error page.

So I deleted that one and installed the PHPbb forum. This one seems ok, but I'm unsure on the setting up of the forum categories. Although this is something I'm sure I can work out if I play around with it.

I just wanted to get opinions though, whether the PHPbb is a good option or if there is a better way that I should do this. Keep in mind that my 'technical' skills are limited so I need something that will be easy to install and maintain.

Thanks
Sheryl

I think phpBB is one of the best forums available. It scales well, has hundreds if not thousands of mods available and best of all it's FREE.

We just recently added forum to our website, I did lot of research before we decided to get vBulletin script. I do not have any technical knowledge also what so ever and that was one of the reasons I got vBulletin. The backend is very easy to use and I can do all the changes needed as it has been made very easy, also overall forum management is made very easy as well. Just go to vBulletin page and play around with it and see if you like it.

  • I have a fair amount of experience with PHPBB2 and 3.

If you can afford it use VBulletin. Much better in my opinion. Then get a custom skin.

Just had a look at VBulletin - bit out of my budget at the moment! Might try phpbb and have a play around with it.
