Domain; Dog.com and Dogs.com the same in Google's eyes?

Hello,

I have a question.

If someone where to try to rank high on the query "Dog" in Google.
Would having Dogs.com be the same as having Dog.com?
Or would one have an advantage over the other?

Opinions are very much appreciated.

    Yes it would be. SE's are able to look for words in the domain names. See it doing a normal search for any keyword.

      I'm not so sure, all things being equal I think you will find dog.com will outrank dogs.com for the term "dog". Exact match domains seem to be well favored, by Google at least. Also if you are running PPC campaigns Google recommends you add both plural and non-plural which indicates they are treated differently.

    You would have the exact same search term in your url with the url dog.com, so yes it would be easier to rank with dog.com when your first get indexed but after that depending on content etc.

    What made me wonder about this was that when I googled "Dog", the keyword Dogs was also in bold.

    Both in the URLs and in the meta description and title tags. See an example of a search in the jpg below.

    Do you think Dogs.com would be easier to rank than Dogsite.com?
    (for the keyword "Dog"). The reason why I think that I would (think, not know...) is that the whole keyword in the URL would become bold when googleing "dog"
    Dogs would be bold, like this, Dogs.com, Dogsite would be like this Dogsite.com

    Any opinions on this?

    They would both hold the same amount of possibility in ranking terms...

    Search engine marketing has moved so far on from this particular kind of thing. It's way past worrying about single letters in a domain name.

    Focus on the content., backlinks, network of sites it sits with and all the more important things we need to take into account now.. the domain name pales into insignificance when you think about the rest...

      Hi

      I agree with what JayXtreme said and would like to add a bit of how I think about this.

      - The Domain name is only 1 aspect for Ranking AND.....
      - Ranking is only 1 aspect for getting Traffic AND..
      - We don't just want to get Traffic but rather TARGETED Traffic And
      - It will take more than a word used or a single letters in a domain name to get that.

      I rather consider the "words" my targeted market would type in the SE to get what they want. Now think, who will be the person who will type dog or dogs in the SE.

      Try doing the following now and you may get an idea of what I am trying to say here...

      Google Dog and sure you find dog.com on the 1st page.

      Add "s" and google Dogs in the SE and you may not find Dog.com BUT For both search of Dog and Dogs you will find a page about Dog Breeds, Breed Information and Picture "from nextdaypets.com appear in 1st page for both search.

      What does that tell us? Now try the following also.....

      Now, I am not a "Dogs" person, but if for some reasons, I wanted to find out about dogs, I will google "everything about dogs" instead of a single word.

      If we google "everything about dogs" , you will find everything-about-dogs.com right at the 1st search results.

      If we take out the "s" and google "everything about dog", the position of
      everything-about-dogs.com drop, but it is still in the 1st page of the search, which is still doing very well consider there is 136,000,000 results from the search.


      Now, I may visit any of the site I googled, yet eventually, it will be the content of the site I visit that determine the ultimate result. Even if I visited the 1st results that appears, If the content is not what I want or did not arouse my interest to stay, I will leave....in one click of my mouse.

      What do you guys think?

    @mrjasonser, great post. I guess the fact that we get different results when Googling "dog" and "dogs" really says it all. They are different.
