OK, I have both Word press blogs and HTML websites. Word press is easy to update, but I have found I get better position on HTML websites. Also, Google hates my flash sites. Some people swear by Joomla, but I feel that HTML is best to rank high in the search engines.

Everyone uses blogs these days. You can create a blog that looks just like a html website.

Blogs rank better in the SE's because the content is separate from the design, thanks to CSS.

One thing I always encourage is for people to create something they have control over. They should own the domain, and have access to the hosting account.

Depending upon your talents.. or those of your staff

You can do whatever you want with a "blog based" website... Most CMS can be crafted to look just like a HTML website..

And, as Alexa stated above.. it really isn't the system that is getting stable rankings, it's the frequent updating and quality of what you put into the system.

Our team have slowly phased out ANY of the HTML websites we were using in niche businesses.. and have migrated over to complete CMS/blog systems. Purely for ease of use and scalability.

One of the reasons you'll find you'll often get more traffic faster to a blog than an html site is the in built pinging function and the ease of SEOing your articles.

It will take care of automatically creating your sitemap and informing Google of your site updates.

And, you can install All-In-One SEO and it will add neat little fields under your post editing area so you can easily keyword optimize without having to get into the head html code of every new page you create: WordPress › All in One SEO Pack WordPress Plugins

Do the above, which only takes a few minutes to setup, and you'll get traffic fast as long as you post original content. Sure, you can achieve the above manually with an html site, but it's going to take much longer.

There are a stack of other benefits of using WP, too many to list here, but on the subject of traffic those are some of the key ones.

WP loads slower than a well made HTML site. However faster than most Dreamweaver sites.

Depends on what you want to do, how often you want to update, how customized you want it to be, how extensive your design skills are, and how much money you have.

As has been stated before, a website IS a blog. And you can use self hosted wordpress as either a blog or a static website - or both.

To use it as a static website, create your content as pages and put them into a structured format with parent pages.

To have it as a blog, put the content into posts and structure the content of your blog posts by using categories.

You can have both page and blog content on the same website, and adjust how it is viewed by using the posts and pages widgets, and choose whether you have a static or dynamic front page.

If you use a theme like Atauhalpa (it's free - google it) you can set up your blog layout to be very flexible, and put menus for pages, categories, etc. where you like. (I use this theme on my own blog)

We had a blog for several months, then took most of the content and converted it into a website. Our earnings instantly job. Now the website earns 250 times what the blog does (calculated by dividing the websites' earnings by the blog earnings.)

I think you need both, to be honest, but I just use blogs to drive traffic to the websites.

Don't make our first mistake, though. Set up a blog with word press under your own domain name (xxx.com/blog). We set up a blog four years ago with a blogspot url, and now wish we had set it up on our own domain with a wordpress blog.
