Stupid fake testimonials...

I just saw one of the dumbest uses of a fake testimonial ever.

It's one of those "Get rich with Twitter" widgets. The site not only used my buddy's real name, but they used one of his URLs, his picture, and part of his bio.

They show a fake check, and quote earnings for him from a program he says he's never used. Then, at the bottom of this flaky spot, they claim that he's been "renumerated." (Why does it not surprise me that people this stupid can't spell? Or do they mean he's been counted a second time?)

I hope he gets really torqued about this. If he does, he's as likely as anyone I know to find the real owners of that site and sue them until they bleed.

First note: Don't do this crap. It's not safe or smart.

Second note: There is no second note. Just don't.

Stoopid, stoopid rat people...

Much like teenagers feel invincible to the very real dangers that somehow narrowly miss most of us growing up, there is a class of internet marketers who operate flagrantly and dangerously because they're unable/unwilling to appreciate the risks.

They mistake nothing happening to them yet with nothing happening to them.

Ironically, they're often the first to cry out indignantly about their earnings when they taste the back of reality's hand.

Un-freaking-believable.....some people will go to any length to procure phony social proof. I hope your friend nukes the offender. With 101 different ways to obtain real testimonials I don't understand why these type of folks think they're taking some kind of shortcut, all they're doing is shooting themselves in the foot. Good catch Paul.

      Rod,
      Good catch Paul.
That's the thing. I didn't catch it. It was re-tweeted by a mutual friend, and I passed it along. So, a whole bunch of people have seen it so far.

Social networking has some interesting effects.

Like Brian said, reality has a way of slapping people who think they're immune to it. This could well be one of those times. Dude is not at all nice about his name being used without permission. Even less so when he thinks it's being connected with what he sees as a scam.

If he goes after these people, I'm buying out the local supermarket's stock of popcorn.

I hope he goes after them too. It's so stupid to do this. It puts you at major risk that is easily avoidable.

It's a simple formula guys...make good content, ask people to review it and try it out, and put real testimonials up.

I think it was on Tradebit.

Maybe your friend has been cloned. It would explain why he was "renumerated."

I am not going to use testimonials, simply because I know that most are FAKED! Instead I will concentrate on bringing value to the table. I have my first live money site and I am steadily working on backlinking right now. If you guys thing that this is the wrong approach please let me know.

Testimonials are never a good source of review for products and services as it is very easy to manipulate. Just can't get over why people would still need to SCAM money out of hard working people.

Yeah. Posting a video is the greatest evidence your giving, and if the testimonial is not been given to you or your product, that's like asking for big big trouble.

The sad thing is that crap like this is killing the value that legitimate and unsolicited testimonials used to add to your product.

Between vermin like this and the attention that the new FTC rules have brought to testimonials their effectiveness has been diminished to the point where some people actually will be skeptical of any testimonials on your site. Just look at the statement above from our new member jvhamby59 saying that he "knows most of them have been faked". While I don't necessarily share his/her opinion I certainly understand it.

I hope your friend gets the justice he deserves with these idiots Paul.

One time I tried to make a landing page testimonial. Even though it was a testimonial of a product I had used, I just felt like it sounded scammy. I know it probably would have worked, but I didn't feel right about it.

Well, there's no worst than other people using your name to scam other people, like what happened to me last 2003. Someone uses my real name to sel antique bottles.. and I was investigated with National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).. that was a nightmare..

I'm guessing I'm still OK with the testimonial on my site from Paul Myers:

"Just being in Kevin Riley's virtual presence has made me a better man. Ever since I started reading Kevin Riley's glowing posts and the unbelievably fantastic newsletter he produces, my life has been filled with meaning, my wife came back, my pickup truck runs again, and my dog has come back to life. I'm forever hopeful that I will one day meet Kevin Riley in person and be permitted to touch the hem of his robe. Upon doing so, I will never wash that hand again."

That Kevin Riley guy sounds like a real winner. And how lucky you are to share the same name. Maybe you'll get to meet him some day.

Another thing he can do is file a DMCA removal notice with Google. This will get his result removed from Google, something that will likely cause him to change his ways.

It's one of the things I've done in similar situations. It's his image and likeness, so it's not hard to prove.
