Are you having trouble writing? Write more!

Hey guys and girls.

Just wanted to put a quick post up about writing in general. I know when you first start out writing, it can be a pain in the butt. You are always looking for what to say and how to say it best. You feel lost throughout the whole process.

I felt this, you probably feel it, and I bet the pro's felt this way too when they started.

Here is something that has greatly made my writing easier.

WRITE MORE!

I have been writing at least something everyday now for about 6 months. I never noticed when exactly writing got easier, but I just got done with a blog post and looked down at the word count and it was over 2000 words. It took me about 35 minutes. 6 months ago I would of laughed at the idea to be able to start writing and not even stop until I had written 2000 words with no research.

This is all because I have didn't stop writing. It comes so easy to me now. I might not have the best grammar, but I get something on paper. You can always get it proof read.

So my advice to those that find themselves having trouble thinking of what to say when they are writing. Don't stop. Make sure to write something, even if it's small, every day. I promise you it will become easy.

This is a big reason people suggest starting in a subject you know and are interested in. It's much easier to write about these subjects. This will get you on the right path and teach you how to easily write the subjects you don't know.

Practice makes perfect.

Good advice! It's true the more you write (or the more you do anything, really) them better you get at it. Another thing I do is I never start writing on a blank page. It seems to paralyze me somehow. I always either jot something meaningless down or just paste something onto the page. Then I can just take off. Of course, when I'm done I delete the gibberish at the top.

I've also had quite a bit of success with setting a timer for 15 minutes or using the Focus Booster software (free download). Write or Die by Dr. Wicked is another fun little app. If I'm up against a ticking timer, I seem to get more done, even if the deadline is an artificial one.

I'm the exact opposite. If I watch the clock or a timer, I write for crap. I believe in working productively, but some of the more creative activities I cannot do if I'm up against a deadline like that. I'm not knocking it, though. You gotta do whatever fits best with your own work habits. It's all part of treating your business like a business, not a hobby.

I used to teach writing, and I always told my students to pretend they're writing a letter to a friend. Nowadays, it's so easy to pretend your blog post is an email to a friend... it will help you get the tone right and remove a lot of the stress that people feel when they sit down to Write with a capital "W."

Good advice, Travis. You hit the nail on the head. The more you do anything, generally the better you become at it. Malcolm Gladwell talked alot about this in his book, "Outliers". Great read, by the way.

    Melanie,

I like to do the same thing especially if I know what I'm writing is going to be long. It helps you keep on track and lead into the next topic. I have a horrible habit of drifting off topic when I'm writing for a while.

    Sandi,

I've never tried setting a time limit to my writing but I have talked with others that have good success with it. It ensures you will be focused on the task at hand.

    lainehmann,

This definitely helps your ease of writing. I really started doing this with my newsletter autoresponders. Having the automatic messages every week, I had to focus on making it sound like I was talking to them that day. I soon realized using this tone made writing fly by.

It also made me sensor half my writing lol. I have somewhat of a potty mouth.

    aquablue,

Totally true. Practice definitely can't hurt your efforts. I will have to check out that book. I'm huge into reading and am always looking for more good books.
