Whois Privacy Necessary?

I've always enabled whois privacy on all of my domains, but recently, I've been reading that it may actually lower your credibility.

I switched over from GoDaddy to NameCheap in order to get a better deal on domain registrations with Whois Privacy enabled, but if it's not necessary, I can just use GoDaddy's cheap $6.99 .com's (w/o Whois) as opposed to NameCheap's $8.89 .com's (with free Whois Protection).

I plan on purchasing a lot of domains for my new niche project, so every penny counts when working on such a large scale.

What do you guys think? Is Whois Privacy important?

Whois privacy offends me. I never use it. Ever.

When I start a business in the brick-and-mortar world, I am required by law to get a licence and post it prominently in my business where clients can see it. That licence has my name and contact information on it. Again, this is required by law.

Explain to me why my online business - my domain name, the "virtual real estate" where my company transacts business - shouldn't have to display the same information.

Forget the money. It's wrong. It is the principle of the thing.

Also, there is some evidence that Private Registration might hurt your SEO results. It's not a huge factor, but every little bit counts.

Just use a PO Box and a VOIP # and you'll be OK.
