advice needed: is this blog ugly?

A friend has asked me to help him revamp his blog, peiprofit.com
I must say that I think that the content of this blog is valuable but that the look and feel is ugly, crass, even spammy-looking.
Am I just being picky - or do other people agree?
I think it is using an old Atomic Blogging theme, but the back-end is seriously messed up so I don't even want to touch it.
Any advice on a free WP theme with a similar set-up, that I could switch to?

    The autoresponder doesn't work. The blog isn't that ugly to me. It doesn't have to be "pretty" in order to make money. Just good content and bringing in continuous targeted traffic.
