What I mean is, why is it that the free version of wordpress blogs have such little options as opposed to the free version of a blogger blog? For example, with a example.blogspot.com I can upload new themes and all of that. But with a example.wordpess.com I can't do any of that at all. I'm stuck using the themes they have (none of which fit my purpose).

Now before anyone tells me that I should be using wordpress on my own domain and hosting. I know that. The problem is that I'm broke and can't get a domain name right now. But I wanted to test something out so I figured I could use a free blog and it would work perfectly fine for my purposes until I purchased a domain.

Back on point: Is the free version of wordpress really that limited? Or am I just missing something..

Because people never read the TOS before signing up.

As to the original question: Yes, it is that limited. And the response to the "why" - because the owner(s) of the site make the rules as they want. It is that simple...

There are also several sites with free Wordpress MU. Those are a lot better than going through Wordpress.com

Yes, your own hosting is the way to go. Wordpress.com deletes pretty aggressively.

you get what you pay for.

aside from some limitations wordpress offers far more than blogger ever has.

Yes, free WordPress is extremely limited. Really not worth using for anything but a non-committed, personal blog, IMO.

Self-hosted WordPress, on the other hand, is absolutely brilliant.

He isn't talking about wordpress on your own site, he is talking about the free version.

Also this SEO stuff about wordpress being the best, can I see some proof or is just a rumor which people just believe in.

As usual, people are jumping in with answers that show they quit reading after the subject line...

Yes, the wordpress.com version is that limited. It's done by design. One, it makes it much simpler for the people who just want a place to post their thoughts, ramblings, family news, whatever. They don't have to wade through screen after screen of choices and options. Two, it helps keep the marketers out. Why should the owners float the bill for bandwidth and storage so other people can run flogs and splogs for money?

Wordpress.com is an offshoot of wordpress.org, with a decidedly UNcommercial leaning. Blogger, on the other hand, belongs to a for-profit corporation and encourages using the service to make money - particularly via their own profit center.

Here's a plan to finance your own domain and hosting...

Register an author account at someplace like textbrokers.com. You can write short articles of middling quality for $2 each.

Write 5 of those articles, and you have your domain paid for the year.

Write 3 every month, and you have a hosting account paid for.

Add 1 more each month to make it 1 article per week, and you'll have your domain renewal paid when it comes up.

For the time it takes to write 50-55 articles of 250-400 words, spread over the course of a year, you have a real domain and hosting account, and you won't have to whine about the free services being limited.

thanks john. I actually wasn't aware of textbrokers I'll definitely look into it.

I am surprised at how much people snap at you for asking a simple question. I wasn't whining or complaining about the fact that it was limited. I just didn't know whether or not it really was that limited or if i was just missing something.

As far as not reading the terms..sure..i'm guilty..but oh well..get over it.

I'm going to look into textbrokers for a method of paying for my domain name so that I can do it the proper way (which is what I would prefer) but I really don't understand the point of snapping at someone for asking a simple question about something he doesn't know everything about.

If this is the type of responses that people are going to give to others that are asking a simple question (that could be answered with a simple yes or no) then I really fear for the future of the warrior forum.

Anyway thanks for the help (to those who actually tried to answer the question) and I will be looking into that john

I guess I wasn't as clear about things as I should have been. I wasn't snapping at you for your original question. I wasn't trying to snap at you at all.

My comment about whining was actually triggered by a later comment about being broke.
Had I not taken you seriously, I would not have taken the time to post a workable plan to finance what you need to get started. I hope you do check it out and make it work.

And don't stop asking questions. That's how people get answers, even if some of those answers are less than diplomatic by crotchety old guys still on their first cup of coffee...

    Seems John explained everything

If you have problem with installation, I can help you(free), just pm me (free)
    Just one SEO tip:
After you install WP, don't use /?p=N link structure, /category/post-name/ or /post-name/ is much more SEO friendly.

Hey, G. The reason the free version of WordPress is so limited is probably support. It's impossible to do a good job of quality control on the thousands of plugins and themes available. BTW, themes can have the same capabilities as plugins, though those possibilities are seldom exploited. A plugin can do bad things to a WordPress installation, so it's prudent to restrict the abilities of the free version. Otherwise they would need to offer support, which costs lots of money.

I agree with the great SEO. My IT husband bought me a $150 wordpress template and it's so easy to add pages, opt-in forms, track visitors. I had used blogger before but was limited in what I could do and now I feel much more in control of my marketing and building an online community around my clients.

Infact Jason sets most of his new website clients up on wordpress and it make it so much easier for people with little or no programming know how to easily manage content. Plus it's not like other hosting companies that charge you monthly and lock you out of the content management system if you transfer to free hosting like word press. That happened to me and I'm really glad I'm using wordpress now!
