Dragon NaturallySpeaking software rocks

hello guys,

I just received dragon naturally speaking software today. For anybody on the fence about getting this software, purchase it now. It's absolutely incredible. I'm writing this post now with it. Just recently, I have been in agony with RSI and this software is a godsend. Obviously it will take time to train the Dragon to suit my accent but I have to say it's doing pretty good out of the box. This is going to make my life so much easier. I paid $49 including shipping which is a really good price. It's really strange to look at the screen and see the text appear before me. Not only will this help but my RSI, but my productivity will increase dramatically. This is probably the best investment I have made. Yes I'm that happy with the software as you can probably tell :-)

Cheers

Alan

Good! You got it. And it will train itself to any accent you may have. If you pronounce the words "parked car" differently than I do, your copy of Dragon will learn that whatever it hears when you say "parked car" is to be related to the printed words "parked car," and it will print parked car.

Used it today with a sound file I had recorded on a handheld digital voice recorder (a cheap one) and it did really well. Can't wait until it's really in the swing of my strangled sounding english accent!

It's certainly a powerful tool for creating content fast. Just be sure to go through the training as that helps it to recognize your speech better.

To train a word say "correct that" or "select that" and then "correct that" when it messes up while you are dictating. I don't have a user manual for mine either. I'm not sure about posting links so just google "dragon naturally speaking manual" first result is for version 9 but should be similar enough, or search around until you find 10.

      Hi All,

This sounds just what I need, as I have tried several other programs without any real success. Will get a copy today and give it a go - if it's really that good and easy it will help me with my goal of writing 100 articles in 50 days.

      Cheers

hello guys, can somebody please tell me how one trains for certain words. It's okay for the majority of my words but there are certain words which are coming out wrong. Is it just a case of clicking on "words" in the Dragon Bar and training for that selected Word or how do you guys do this. I have just trained the software for a couple of words but when I repeat the words they're still coming out wrong. i have a really cheap headset which I intend to replace shortly.
        thanks guys

That's awesome, so I know that with certain accents it takes a little training, did you find any issues at all with that? The reason why I ask is because I have a New Zealand accent.

Would love to get Mac Speech Dictate but still haven't heard enough to be convinced to get it, the reviews seem pretty mixed.

Glad your software is working out great for you, must be fun seeing those words appear without having to type a single character.

Also, don't forget about the free voice recognition that comes pre-installed with Vista machines upwards. Just look in your control panel for "Speech Recognition".

Although maybe not quite as advanced as Dragon Naturally Speaking, I use it on one machine and it actually works pretty good.

I remember when Vista was about to come out and they tried showing off the Speech Recognition ability at a conference and how badly it went. Ok, link to video because I can't help myself.

@Pattaya-Addict I too have a cheap headset that I need to replace. When you are dictating and it messes up a word say "select that" then say "correct that". Look at my previous post in this thread. Google search and you can find an online or pdf version of the manual you are lacking.

@IWebGirl What accent do you have?

@Paul D Brady In English it's great though I guess with accents your mileage may vary. I've got a US Southern accent and for the most part does fine. My most annoying one is that when I say "you" it thinks I say "view" and view is a command that brings down a menu. I can't continue dictating until I click off the menu and place the cursor where it needs to be, type you, then continue on. I have tried word training on it repeatedly to no avail.

That video shows exactly the same experience I had when I tried the Vista version of voice recognition software.

I have Dragon Naturally Speaking though and I absolutely love it.

I've lost count how many times I've been recommended Dragon Naturally Speaking. Sounds like it's the real deal, and I could really use for my upcoming product transcription. :-)

Like some of the posters here, yeah my main concern is accent. Also, I wonder how reliable the software is in picking up words and distinguishing them? For example, words that sound almost the same like:

    - "write" "right"
    - "leave" "leaf" "lift"
    - "that" "dad"

    You get the idea.

The software does a good job with picking the right word as long as you speak in phrases or complete sentences. If you say just one or two words it will put something on the screen but if you speak in longer phrases it can use the context of your sentence to figure out the right words.

My results with NSD is more like the Vista video.

Maybe I didn't have enough patience to train it...

I'm American and don't think I have an accent.

When you fire it up, you choose which accent you have, and it automatically recognizes your speech and tonality from there on out. They do this from their massive community of users all allowing the training data to be fed back to the programmers via the web/software interface (you can opt out of sharing that if you like). THAT is why it works so well for accents around the world.

The only danger is that you can end up rambling and text needs to be more pithy than ever these days.

However, it's a beautiful thing being able to "write" a 1500 word article in under 60 mins :-)

Man oh man... If I wasn't newly unemployed, I'd buy it. I've just decided to write my first book and in order to get it done fast, I've decided to dictate it. I can talk about my subject all day long and it's much easier to just yap than it is to write.

I'm a published author (articles, not books) and facing a blank MS Word screen is always the hardest part. Once I get something down, it's just a matter of editing. Nor that editing can't take quite a bit of time, but dictating the rough draft should be a lot easier and save LOADS of time.

There was a thread here about Google Voice quite a while back and someone mentioned you could use Google Voice to dictate and transcribe your stuff.

Anyone have and ideas/thoughts/tips/advice for using Google Voice for this?

        Thanks,
        Michelle

@Iklein Did you do any training with it at all? I booted it up and it came up with a training page and I picked one of the hard level one's or what not and it did quite well for me after that. If you still have it try one or two of the training deals and try it again and let me know if it works then.

@Nightengale Google voice I think is worse on my voicemails than the MS Vista video I posted is for dictation. I get a voicemail and get the text or email version of it and it leaves me so confused that I have to call and check it asap or the curiosity will make my head explode because it makes worse than no sense if thats possible. Sorry, google voice transcription just drives me batty.

...and that's just for an English accent, I'm sure my accent would probably cause smoke to come out if it, hehehe.

I do a lot of writing so I've always been interested in this software to save my hands from RSI, I would however prefer the Mac version because I work primarily on a Mac but I wouldn't rule out DNS if it works better than Mac Speech.
