My Site Just Got Mentioned In An Article on the NY Times - What Should I Do?

I have a membership site that just got mentioned in an article on the NY Times website.

I do not know quite how to react, but this seems pretty dang cool!

What are some things that I can do to make sure it gains maximum exposure?

Cheers

If it were me I would see if I could get Ron Douglas to give me a few pointers.

He knows more about this than any other Warrior I can think of.

I'm not sure if you can PM him, but that's what I would do.

He is one incredibly helpful gentleman...

Well, if future fame and fortune and all the money that comes along with that albatross is worth $37 to you, you could join the War Room right now and eliminate that hurdle.

Well, if you do join you will then have access to a boatload of tools that you will need in the future, anyway.

Trust me, once you get inside and look around (dig deep through the past pages) you will see what I mean...

            Good luck,

If you can't connect with Ron, you might want to put up a special offer for NYT Readers and try to capitalize on the incoming traffic.

You're going to have an amazing couple of weeks. Truly well done.

Sell them something in relation to your article.. right at the top of your site, so they can't miss it.

You've got tens of thousands of targeted traffic right now, so sell them something that relates to why they are there.

Start collecting a mailing list too, again keep the opt-in box above the fold. You want to make sure as many of these new visitors become repeat visitors.

In my experience, some do and some don't. When my newsletter was written up in Writers Digest Magazine I would have never known it if one of my subscribers didn't write to tell me about it.

On the other hand, when Times called me about a story I wrote they told me when it would run if they used it. Unfortunately, they didn't run the story they were working on so I didn't get any publicity out of that. It got them an extra sale though...because you know I did buy the magazine to see if I was in it.

No one notified me of this.

I would like to make clear that my site was not the main subject of the article, but it is mentioned along with a link.

        Awesome news.

You can even make a REAL claim that your site was "Seen In The New York Times". :-) *

You might want to take the time to promote their article through a little social bookmarking, especially if you use any automated tools.

You want as many people as possible to become aware of their article since it builds credibility to your membership site.

Do they have an option to leave a comment under the article? If so, you need to leave your comment, making sure you explain who you are. Not sure if you are allowed to offer a link to a special discount in your comment or not. It would be worth a quick phone call to the NYT to find out. (Note: I said phone call, not email, big difference.)

Call and thank the author of the article, and mention if there is anything else you can help him with, to let you know. Might lead to an opportunity for an interview, or another article.

Did anyone say Press Release??? You now have a great piece to use as part of a press release for your site.

    Congratulations!!!

Depending on the actual content of the article, there are MANY things you can do to be proactive in this scenario.

    1. Make sure you have a MEDIA section somewhere on your site or blog-you can put the snippet of the article there as well as press releases you have done (or should do NOW) about your site
    2. Get photocopies of the article with the NY Times logo at the top and mail copies to influential people in your area or potential clients with a note as to why you might like to talk to them. This one will depend on your market and the pricepoint of your product as well, but this technique can be extremely effective at garnering attention from the people you want to get in front of.
    3. Make sure that you start building your OWN list of contacts at local and major newspapers, starting with the NY Times. Find out their exact protocol of submitting press releases and then do so at the rate of one every other month or so.
    4. Get a digital copy of the article or scan and embed it into a newsletter to your email or newsletter database.
    5. Tweet baby! Depending on how many followers you have, or if you can get together a Twitter Party, you can get hundreds of links directly if you construct a few unique and interesting tweets containing the link.

Using the above methods, I have gotten tens of thousands of hits to websites for myself and my clients following just such and occurrence...good luck!
