Quick PayPal Question

I'm considering trying PayPal to sell downloadable products.

(1) Can PayPal be used by purchasers without them having to register on PayPal?

(2) After the customer has completed the PayPal checkout, is there a way for my site to take them to an otherwise unavailable download page on my site?

    Hi Russ,

    Yes to both questions. People can purchase through your PayPal link even if they don't have a PayPal account. They just need a credit card.

    When you create your payment button in PayPal, you can designate the download/thankyou page.

    Paypal will work good for your situation. The only problem is that it will direct them to a download page where they can easily share the link with other people. You may lose sales because of the way this works.

    The only thing I will add is there are some countries in the World that paypal does not permit to use credit cards, so those people would either need to get a paypal account, or pay you by some other means. In my experience, this has not been too big of an issue, as most people can use paypal.

    Hi Russ,

    We use PayPal as the merchant account on one of our sites that sells physical products and have found that there is a little confusion on the customers' part as to " Do they need a PayPal account" when they are presented with the option of paying through PayPal.

    It may be different with downloadable products, but including definitive verbage as to them NOT needing a PayPal account may help eliminate the confusion. We had to add a stronger message about this on our website, and reiterate that fact to our first time customers when they place phone orders.

    Our experience indicates that when new customers are presented with a naked PayPal invoice their first instinct is to ask themselves the question as to whether or not to continue with the checkout due to this uncertainty.

    Your milage may vary, but this has been a real issue in the past for us.
