How To Transfer Name From Hostgator

Does anyoe know what the proceedure is for transferring a domain name from
hostgator.

I have bought a domain name from someone and the domain name is with
hostgator.

I would like to swap it to Godaddy.

The seller has given me the EPP code for the name but I have a feeling that
they have to start the transfer proceedure from within their hostgator account.

I havnt got an hostgator account myself so not sure and after googleing
different terms for about an hour I still cant find any help on this matter.

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Terry

      Hi Tony

      You could well be right.

The seller just said the domain name was with hostgator
so I will have to get back and see if his hosting is with
hostgator and his domain name with someone else.

Just a thought though dont they offer a free domain name if you
      take hosting out with them.

Unless they use third party registrant hostgator sells domain names when you open new hosting account with them.

    Hi Terry

Not that I am aware of. I don't think they deal in domains at all.

The seller probably just means that is where it is hosted at and not registered at. Just find his registrar and transfer it to Godaddy (as long as it isn't a new domain as it probably can't be moved for a while).

    All the best

    Hi Terry

Actually just checked and they do have the option for registering a new domain name as mentioned above.

So it could be registered there afterwards!

I have not had a domain registered with hostgator but I have found as a rule that it is much easier to take control of a domain with whatever registrar already has it and then once it is in my name transfer it to my preferred company. Usually the push to another account with the same company is easy and then you have control of both sides so it makes the transfer to another company much easier as well.

There is usually a waiting period for the second step (60-90 days) but I have not found it to be an issue as the domain is already in my name anyway so no huge hurry as long as I get it done before renewal time.

Last I knew, most hosts DO sell domain names. If they don't, they are ASKING for trouble. What would YOU rather do?

    1. Sell domain names, maybe make a few extra dollars. Moves can be easily controlled by YOU transparently!

    OR...

    2. NOT sell domain names, lose business because of perceived complexity, get LOTS of questions, a bad rep, lots of hassle, and PROBABLY lose business! Moves can be a NIGHTMARE!

Frankly, I like option #1 a LOT better. You see, if you buy a domain name from a host, it almost ALWAYS defaults to THEIR name servers. That means it works with that host BY DEFAULT! Other domain names ***NEVER*** have that default, so you must set it.

And YEAH, the owner of the domain has to request the transfer. YOU then have to respond.
